Bradley, Laurence

The late Laurence Bradley Deep shock engulfed the local and indeed wider community on June 13th, 2006 with the sudden death of Laurence Bradley, Gortinure Road, at the age of 64. Laurence was a well known figure at sporting and cultural events throughout South Derry and much further afield over many years. Despite the affliction of a painful arthritic condition for over 20 years, he bore his suffering with great courage and dignity and never allowed the anguish to impinge on the activities he cherished most. A staunch defender for Robert Emmets from the late 1950s until the late 1970s, Laurence played a pivotal role in the senior football championship offensive which saw Slaughtneil lost to Bellaghy in the county final of 1969. However, his dream became reality when his sons, Paul and Larry, were key members of the historic team which brought the John McLaughlin Cup to Emmet Park for the first time in 2004. As an ardent Derry supporter, Laurence travelled to practically every county ground in Ireland. Testimony to this was the visit to his home on the night of his death of the Derry senior football panel and management team. He will also be remembered fondly by staff and pupils, past and present, of St Patrick's College, Maghera, especially those whom he drove to countless training sessions and competitive games over many years. Laurence was deeply devoted to his family and his faith. In fact, no summer was complete without his presence in the Basilica at Knock for the spiritual exercises on the great feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. Requiem Mass in St John the Baptist Church, Granaghan was celebrated by Fr Kieran O'Doherty PP, assisted by Fr Colm Rafferty and Fr Des Corrigan SMA, Dromantine. It was fitting that family members participated in the readings from Scripture, bidding prayers, presentation of gifts and communion reflection. Fr O'Doherty spoke eloquently of Laurence's many virtues and the great devotion and care shown by his wife Geraldine and family over many years. The parish choir added poignantly to the funeral service. The Slaughtneil community extended deep sympathy to Geraldine, daughter Maria and sons Brian, James, Larry, Paul and Cathal. May his soul rest in peace. Courtesy of the Mid Ulster Observer 20 July 2006
