Limerick GAA have paid tribute to Shane Dowling after the talented forward announced his retirement from inter-county hurling as a result of an ongoing knee problem.

The Na Piarsaigh clubman won two Munster SHC titles with Limerick in 2013 and 2019 after having made his senior championship debut as a 19-year-old in 2012.

The pinnacle of his inter-county career came in 2018 when he helped the Treaty County end a 45-year wait for the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

Dowling had such a knack for scoring important goals and it was his major that edged out Galway in the All-Ireland SHC final two years ago.

Limerick GAA chairman John Cregan hailed the 27-year-old as a role model for young Limerick players to look up to and thanked him for his contribution to hurling in the county.

"Shane has been a fantastic servant to Limerick GAA and has been a role model that a lot of our younger people in Limerick aspire to be," Cregan said in a statement published on Limerick GAA.

"We wish him well in his early retirement and thank him for all his wonderful memories he has given to so many Limerick fans down through the years."
