Galway’s senior hurlers were understood to be locked in talks last night over the recent shock resignation of manager Micheál Donoghue.

Donoghue confirmed his decision to step down last Tuesday night after four seasons in charge of the Tribesmen, with speculation rife that the Clarinbridge man, who had agreed a two-year extension to his term earlier in the year, and the county board were in disagreement over funding for the team.

The Tuam Herald reported that the Galway players met last night to discuss their next move, with rumours that a number of high-profile players within the sqaud are unhappy with Donoghue’s departure.

However, the chances of a dramatic U-turn from the 2017 All-Ireland winning boss are thought to be unlikely with a report in today’s Irish Independent claiming that “a well-placed source” was adamant that there’d be no return for Donoghue and his backroom team, stating they “are not going back. They have made up their mind; they thought about it.”
