Boland, Margaret

Margaret or 'Maggie' as she was better known, will forever hold a special place in the annals of Lough Lene Gaels camogie club. Late of Ashefield, Mullingar and formerly of Barbavilla, Collinstown, she played an important role in the founding of the club and was its first chairperson in 1986 and '87.

Determined to revive camogie in the Collinstown / Fore / Drumcree area after a lapse of 30 years, Maggie came together with Anne Smyth, who later became principal of St. Mary's NS, Collinstown, to form the Lough Lene Gaels club on February 10 1986. Fittingly, the only game Maggie ever played for the newly-formed club yielded a first competitive victory at the expense of Moate in the Carmelite College on May 10 1987. Since then, Lough Lene Gaels have established themselves as a powerhouse of Westmeath camogie, something which Maggie took enormous satisfaction from.

A Lough Lene Gaels jersey was placed on Maggie's coffin at her funeral in recognition of her vast contribution to the club. The mother-of-one was predeceased by her husband Pat in 1997.
