Westmeath manager Jack Cooney feels that something is wrong if players are not enjoying their football.

There seems to be a feel good factor in the Westmeath camp at the minute after they won the O’Byrne Cup for the first time in 31 years last weekend.

The Lake County defeated a much changed Dublin side in the final, but the manner of victory has excited many of their supporters.

There has been a lot of talk about the demands an inter-county footballer has to make these days, Cooney is well aware of that.

And he stressed to the Westmeath Examiner that despite the commitment, it is imperative that players enjoy it.

“There’s an awful lot of talk about inter-county football, the levels of commitment and so on, and a certain amount of it is true. But at the same time, lads want that and they are willing to give that level of commitment,” said Cooney.

“It is also very important that there is a huge amount of enjoyment in it, that they don’t feel that it’s a chore. They started out playing football for fun and enjoyment, so we can’t lose it along the way.”
