Liverpool are set to pay tribute to the Irish fan who was assaulted before Tuesday night's Champions League semi-final first-leg clash against Roma at Anfield.

Meath man Sean Cox remains in a critical condition in Walton Neurological Centre in Liverpool after the attack by two Roma fans outside the stadium prior to kick-off.

A well-known member of the Dunboyne community, Sean served as St Peter's GAA chairman from 2013 to 2015 and a spokesperson from the club has recently confirmed to the Irish Independent Liverpool's request to hang one of their jerseys in the away dressing room wall for next Wednesday night's second leg in the Italian capital.

"The request for the St Peter's jersey has been made and Sean will be remembered before the game in Rome. The message from the club is that You'll Never Walk Alone," a club source told the Irish Sun.

"It is a very touching gesture."

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson tweeted his best wishes to Sean yesterday on behalf of himself and the team as the 53-year-old continues to fight for his life.

"The thoughts and prayers of all the players are with the Liverpool fan who is currently very poorly in hospital, after being badly hurt ahead of our game last night," Henderson said.

"He came to watch a football match and support our team - the only result that matters to us now is that he recovers and can return home to be with his family and loved ones."
