Kildare manager Cian O’Neill has explained former Kilkenny hurler Michael Fennelly’s role in his backroom team.

News that the eight-time All-Ireland winner was appointed as Performance Coach for the Kildare senior footballers raised an eyebrow or two.

Fennelly is still plying his trade with his club Ballyhale Shamrocks who are now in the All-Ireland club SHC semi-final, but he was on the line for Kildare’s opening O’Byrne Cup match against Carlow last weekend.

And O’Neill has explained Fennelly’s role to the Leinster Leader stating that it would cover a number of areas.

“He will be working on those intangibles, like your team work, your coherence, resilience; he will be a great aid for me and the management team as regards to his observation role but most importantly for the players,” said O’Neill.

“He’ll be there to observe them when it matters mostly, at training and at matches giving feedback; one-on-ones; acting as a conduit between the players and the management, it’s a very broad role.”
