Micheál Donoghue's surprise resignation as Galway hurling manager on Tuesday could pave the way for one of his backroom team to take the reins in Offaly.

Francis Forde, who served as Galway coach under Donoghue, has close links with the Faithful County through his teaching job at Banagher College. The Turloughmore man led Banagher College to All-Ireland Vocational Schools success in 2010 before working as a coach under then Offaly manager Joe Dooley.

In 2016, he guided St Rynagh's to their first Sean Robbins Cup in 23 years. With Offaly hurling at rock bottom following relegation to the Christy Ring Cup, the Irish Independent is speculating that the former Galway hurler could be the man to revive their fortunes.
