Tyrone defender Cathal McCarron will be playing his club football in Kildare after his switch to Athy from Dromore was rubber-stamped this week.

McCarron indicated that he would be moving on last September after Dromore's defeat to Clonoe in the Tyrone SFC, as he is living with his partner in Athy.

He also trained with the South Kildare outfit while he attended the Cuan Mhuire addiction rehabilitation clinic to receive treatment for his much publicised gambling problem in 2014.

Twice nominated for an All-Star, McCarron featured last Sunday week as Tyrone secured a dramatic injury-time Allianz League victory in Newbridge over a Kildare side that included new clubmates Kevin Fehily, Niall Kelly and David Hyland.

He will not be switching allegiances at inter-county level however, having committed himself to the Red Hands as they continue to strive for a first All-Ireland since 2008.

The recruitment will be seen as a huge boost to Athy, who last won the Kildare SFC in 2011, although McCarron's availability could be in doubt if the Kildare championship is taking place while Tyrone are still involved in the All-Ireland SFC.
