Top golfer Shane Lowry will be the star attraction at a golf classic to be held over the Christmas period for fellow Clara man John Buckley, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

News of the 41-year-old's illness has shocked the local community. John is well-known in GAA circles and is the holder of Offaly SFC and JFC medals. The former goalkeeper was manager of the Clara U15 footballers this year, but, unfortunately, was unable to attend their recent championship quarter-final defeat to St Broughan's.

He had been rehearsing for a Eurovision fundraiser in aid of Clara ladies football club when he received the life-changing news a few weeks ago.

Now four-time All-Ireland hurling final referee and Clara GAA chairman Brian Gavin is organising a golf classic to help out with John's medical bills. It will take place in Shane Lowry's local Esker Hills Golf Club on Saturday, December 29.
