Croke Park Stewards - 5 Like(s)
Many people are selfish and pig-headed, and that makes the Stewarding job difficult.
If people observed the rules, then I guess they could afford to have a lighter touch. But I think experience has caused them to view everyone as a potential rule-breaker, hence the heavy hands.
The fact that pitch access is restricted in Croke Park is well known. Yet many, likely in the heat of the moment, decide that the rules couldn't possibly apply to them personally, make access attempts. How are the stewards supposed to react? 'Ah, sure it'll be grand, it's only one or two' is not the approach to take.
I've seen this at grounds around the country. For example, at Healy Park, on the terrace side, there are very clear signs informing patrons not to stand at pitch side fence. This causes two problems - blocking the pedestrian walkway between the terrace and pitch, and blocking the view of people in the first few rows of the terrace.
Several times, I've seen people assume the rules don't apply to them, arrive late and park themselves in a prime viewing position. I've also seen weak-willed stewarding who fail to clear these people and the problem is compounded with crowds 2 and 3 deep there.
Observe the rules, enforce the rules and ensure a safe event for all.
Fire ahead with the thumbs down, lads. Rules are there to be broken after all.

Monaghan In AI Semi Final This Weekend - 5 Like(s)
The U15 development squad play Derry in AI semi final this Saturday in Emyvale. Game 1 at 11.30, game 2 afterwards. (there are two teams competing)
This team has beaten Dublin, Sligo and an excellent Down outfit in a recent cracker and play a fine brand of open, running football.
I'm sure the lads would appreciate a bit of support.

Tyrone Boycott Of RTE - 4 Like(s)
Replying To Curlew66: "Good summary Tearsin85 with two important omissions
* Comedy sketch had 'Pretty little girl from Omagh' as a backing track shortly after Mickey Harte's only daughter was murdered on her honeymoon. Hard to believe I know
* Follow up apology by DJ included ' you must have a sense of humour about these things'" Thanks for the additional info, Curlew66. I've had a listen to the sketch and it is truly in bad taste, and if the 'apology' was as ill-judged as you state, that's another nail in the coffin.
However, further digging today reveals that MH had embarked on his boycott of the broadcaster BEFORE the transmission of the sketch;
https://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/mickey-harte-brian-carthy-and-that-fourpage-letter-to-rte-26741449.html
The sketch was broadcast on the 9th of June - MH embarked on his campaign refusing to speak to RTE *before* that date (and from the above article seemed to be seeking support from others in this campaign as well).
There appears to be a degree of revisionism at play here.
Of course, the sketch and faux apology might be enough to cause or cement the attitude and boycott, but it cannot be denied that the root cause was a petty and sordid attempt to interfere in the workings of a broadcaster for the benefit of an aquaintance (nothing new there when it comes to RTE, you might say!!). The sketch came later and undoubtably made matters (much) worse, but it's clear to me that events commenced when MH followed through on the veiled threats of un co-operation contained in what can only be considered an ill-judged letter.
Nothwithstanding the above, I would still have a large degree of sympathy for him. It's a pity that an entire generation of players is denied the kind of exposure they deserve but I can see how it can work to Tyrones advantage as well and they have done their talking on the pitch so what does it really matter in the end?
(I've had the pleasure of meeting Mickey professionally on a couple of occasions and was privlidged to see him analyse game tactics. He's an insightful and knowledgable student of the game and it's everyones loss not to have access to his analysis. Maybe he'll show up on $ky when his Tyrone days are done - might be worth subscribing then!)

This Lark Of Doing Away With Provincial Championships (Football Anway) - 4 Like(s)
Replying To Fairplayalways: "listening to a lot on this lately..Isnt it kind of scary to think lesser teams (such as Offaly) may not win a provincial final again (at least anytime soon), realistically, we wont win an All Ireland (again anytime soon)..so once the weaker teams get knocked out in their province, they get a few qualifier games, eventually getting beat, sometimes first game, and that's it...people calling for scrapping provincial championships should remember that Offaly, Carlow, Wicklow, Wexford, Louth (even Kildare & Meath now Ide say) etc in Leinster, and Leitrim and Sligo in Connaught, Clare, Tipp & Limerick & Waterford in Munster, Fermanagh & Antrim in Ulster would take hand and all any year if they were offered a provincial title...get rid of provincials and these counties may never win anything, its the so called little victories keep such counties going, with an All Ireland almost beyond them most years over the last few decades, cannot see it changing radically either to be honest." But isn't the motivation for getting rid of provincials to allow time and space for a graded, multi-tiered competition in which the so-called weaker counties absolutely have a chance of winning at their own level, and progressing upwards if good enough?

Whatsapp With The GAA? - 4 Like(s)
This is not only a GDPR issue and to pigeon-hole it as such is short-sighted, and likely missing the point.
There's also significant and very pertinent child protection issues here.
This year, my 15 year old moves up to U17/Minor. Training is ramping up, events are being organised and gym sessions programmed. As parents, we have had not one peep from the club about any of this. All the children are in a whatsapp group and management communicate that way.We don't even have any indication of who the team mentors are, or how to contact them.
i'm all for increasing personal responsibility as the kids grow older, but this is not the way.
This is wholly unsatisfactory. I know that the club is aware of child protection guidelines under which this approach is a major no no. If there's any chance that a new, dedicated, proprietary communications system provides wide-spectrum compliance out of the box for clubs, we should all be clambering all over it.
I had a short stint of involvement at committee level and the major eye-opener for me was the overwhelming level of compliance requirements that are club responsibilities. It's an impossible ask for volunteers to become experts in and have responsibility for all the legislation, requirements and guidelines around insurance, public safety, data processing, health & wellness, child protection and all the rest. When these tasks fall to a diminishing pool of active volunteers, the challenge is doubled.
The more that can be done centrally to lift these responsibilities, the better.
it's all very well scoffing at the grab all association's latest money-making scheme, but when a club finds themselves mired in a child protection debacle garnering national news coverage all because they chose to ignore best practice guidelines, it wont be so frivolous then.
There's a lot of things wrong in the GAA, this is not one of them.

Interesting set of figures.
Leaving Dublin aside, there's a fair gap between funding received and county performance for nos 2, 3 & 4 over the period in question.
It would also be interesting to see the breakdown by player and/or club membership numbers. It's hard to believe that Dublin has more than 10x as many players / members as Cork?

Really devastatingly shocking and deeply sad news. You can't help but feel for the group of players, their mentors, parents and the wider Monaghan GAA family. For those with sons of similar age, this is something that hits home in a profound way.
Monaghan GAA are exceptionally good at supporting their county teams at all levels in terms of facilities, resources and guidance. I would hope that this team receive the support they will need in the coming days and weeks to help them through the inevitably tough times ahead.

Shockingly negative stuff there from Fermanagh. Players lying down writing in agony after every tackle. Medics must have put up some distance on their trackers. You wouldn't see it at a soccer match.
Couldn't take their beating either. Very poor attitude. The sooner those negative tactics can be eliminated, the better. Makes for very very boring games.

Monaghan - 3 Like(s)
Replying To ConnollyDub: "For the record i am in no way a covid denier, or an anti vaxxer or anything like that.
But we are constantly being told that government are just ''following the science''
Well the science is telling us that the chance of catching covid in an outdoor setting are slim to none.. 0.1%
Ok people broke rules, rules apply to everyone. And they should be punished and all that..
But this fox outrage, my god lads....get a grip" So I've heard this 0.1% figure a couple of times today, and thought I'd take a look.
It's encouraging data, and hopefully will lead to some easing of strict outdoor rules. However, people need to be careful with stats like this, and how they get thrown around.
For example, it's not accurate to say the chances of getting covid outdoor are 0.1%. The actual data says that of all known Covid cases recorded, 0.1% can be traced to outdoor activity.
The truth is, the actual likelihood of catching Covid outdoors is probably a lot less, maybe 0.01% , or 0.001%. That's because the 0.1% figure relates only to known Covid cases. What about all the instances of people being outdoors and not catching a whiff of Covid at all?
So, in this case, the quoted statistic is inaccurate (in ConnollyDub's favour). Indeed, he might be painting a much bleaker picture than is actually the case and his argument is further supported.
However, 20% of all cases are registered as 'community transmission', which we've come to understand as 'we haven't a clue where it came from'. So, it's reasonable to assume that at least some of those cases originated outdoors.
And further, when you look into the data (https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/outdoor-transmission-accounts-for-0-1-of-state-s-covid-19-cases-1.4529036), you could justifiably construct this kind of scare headline based on the statistics;
'Half of all Covid cases and outbreaks associated with outdoor transmission are traced to sporting activities and fitness'
So, that presents things in a different light, no? Suddenly, that group training looks like a far riskier proposition. (even though it's not really, but can be spun to seem so.)
And one further consideration: Maybe an important factor in the low outdoor transmission rates in known cases is the fact that we're not really engaging in much outdoor activity, particularly group and close contact activity because, you know, lockdown.
So, what does all this mean?
Well, as I see it, the low transmission rates should be a motivation for easing lockdown. But when that happens, expect cases linked to outdoor transmission to rise because we're all engaging in more outdoor activity. And as we can see from the above, once the sports ramps up, 50% of outdoor cases might continue to be attributed to this close contact activity. So half of a much higher number of cases will originate from sports.
And of course, given that people engaging in sports ore younger and healthier, they are less likely to be vaccinated. Whereas older persons engaging in outdoor activity will be more likely to be vaccinated. So sports % could rise even more.
And, of course, I may be talking through my hat. You know what they say about lies & statistics.

Can Monaghan GAA Stand By Their Man? - 3 Like(s)
Replying To HB245: "Not blaming Banty or anyone involved in the Monaghan set up for this latest fiasco. Every single county in Ireland is doing it in some shape or form.
I don't know what people expect from Banty, granted, he did get it wrong against Cavan last year, but this team has ran its course and Malachy O'Rourke got out at a great time.
Realistically speaking, when you take population into account, we're not going to reach the levels of the 2013-2018 Monaghan sides for a very, very long time." Who would you blame, then, if not the team manager or any of the coaches, background team or administrators?
Did a magical whatsapp appear summoning all and sundry to Corduff one fine spring evening for what? a Zoom call etiquette instruction session?
The manager and those involved in the setup are EXACTLY the people to blame. We all know how this works. As soon as the call goes out, players are under immense pressure to comply. The stories of the same manager exerting pressure on young lads not to play for their club teams when managing the minors were rife - and those children were under no doubt that if they complied with the GAA rulebook, they could say goodbye to turning out for their county. Sprains & strains abounded in that group, apparently, but thankfully they all got cleared up in time for county match day.
Maybe that medical team should be put in charge of curing Covid - we'd have everyone back playing last week.
And the excuse that everyone is at it ''in some shape or form' is shockingly blinkered. There is no excuse for ANYONE doing it, and just because others are doesn't mean everyone should.
We all have children, family members, friends or acquaintances that are going around the bend waiting for even training to start back up again. This kind of selfish, underhand, cute hooriery is jeopardising that return for everyone. Not to mention general public health and the reputation (?) of the GAA at all levels.
And its as you say - it's not like this Monaghan outfit are likely to be stellar performers in the near future, so to what end the covert training???

I wouldn't have a problem with the GAA requesting full price for what's a restricted number of tickets. Additionally, ticket income for the organization as a whole has been non existent for the past year or so, so no problem here paying the asking price, for those reasons, and to support the GAA.
As long as this doesn't set a precedent and we get back to juvenile pricing in the future, maybe when stadium capacities return to normal?

Had to suffer through TG4 commentary for that as am abroad and raging I didn't get to Clones.
Excellent result. Brilliant to see Stephen OHanlon announce himself with a goal and a set up. Looking forward to himself and McManus torturing a few back lines this season.
Thought McCarron had a brilliant game, especially first half and he was going right to the end., as were all the lads.
I was especially delighted to see Monaghan attack again and again in the last 10 minutes. I think last season, they would have sat back on a 3 point lead and tried to play keep-ball, ultimately getting caught out.
Super stuff.

Replying To witnof: "Rules are not first out of the hat have home advantage.

Also people are saying Newbridge should be done up.
Ok how? Who pays? Don't say Croke Park, becuase according to everyone they shouldn't be focused on manking money so should ahve no money to give away" That's not quite correct.
Have a look at this article;
https://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/sport/gaa/former-gaa-disputes-official-kildare-have-strong-case-against-croke-park-851193.html
particularly the section dealing with the relevant rule;
"Kildare can argue that CCCC is unreasonably in breach of r6.28(A) (v) (2): 'Home Venues SHALL be used in Rounds 1, 2 and 3 of the All-Ireland Qualifier Series, with first Team drawn having Home Advantage' and only exception is 'Venues for Rd 4 shall be determined by CCCC'.
The rules explicitly give CCCC control of venues for round 4 draw. This explicit permission is NOT included in the rule for draws relating to round 1-3. The rules state that the only reason for change of home advantage is if the second team drawn are from a lower division.
I would expect this rule to be ammended by GAA post haste but as it stands, Kildare are 100% correct and justified in their stance.
