Dublin fan logic... - it's not about the money - it's not our fault we have a large population - Leitrim should use their pitiful playing and financial resources to challenge us - let's laugh and gloat at those less financially fortunate than us

Listening to Morrissey and mcstay you'd think this was a game riddled with mistakes. Only once have they praised the efforts and skills. Some great scores and tackling. Great game.

Meath v Kildare Semi-final - 6 Like(s)
From an outside perspective, Gaa supporters around the country have been waiting for Meath and Kildare to mount a serious charge on Dublin for years and this looked like the year to do so. On tonight's performance, Kildare are two years ahead in their development. Meath badly need to get to div1 to figure out for themselves what it takes to cope with the big boys. Monaghan had to yoyo for years between div1&2 and it's served us well. It takes time. It will only happen with the right aptitude and know your place and what you need to do. On the game itself, the basics were missing... - No kick out strategy. Kicking long played in to their hands. This is crazy and distrusted your own gameplan. - Backs exposed one on one for the entire game. Your half forwards came back to pick up loose ball, not to tackle or lend a hand. Shur I could do that!!,! - Game passed by too many players. You have to get in to a game like this not waiting for it to come to you. Biggy should have gone to the half back line to collect one ball just to get on it and make plays, build confidence etc. - tackling looked poor, mainly because you were tackling individually and not supporting in groups. - Management should have had a plan to stop Kildare, they looked solely focused on the Meath game plan. - Lastly and most unforgiving of all - it looked like you were playing together for the first time. No cohesion, no teamwork, workrate, no leaders, no character, nobody wanted to take control of the sinking ship. Hard work trumps everything so if the players only bothered to put their bodies on the line and show their anger and frustrating by trying harder, the score (not the result) would have been different. Players body language suggested "not my man...I did my job....it wasn't my fault". If the players can sit down and take ownership and responsibility for that performance this morning it's a quick fix but if they need to be told - it could be a long road ahead. Best of luck lads. Gaa needs a strong Meath team.

Perspective: Growing up close to the Meath border in the 90's, we had to endure the sight of proud Meath men from Meathhill, Drumconrath and further afield marching on our terrain on errands in to Carrickmacross. I sometimes felt they did so just to show off their proud attire to their downtrodden neighbours. They overtook our pubs and nightclubs with more Meath jerseys than Monaghan on display - often with more success in Billy Brennan's barn too!! The local schools were thronged with happy Meath folk and we dare not cross the border in the Summer months as there was only so much yellow and green fertiliser bags wrapped around a telegraph pole we could take!!! More recent years has seen this trend reverse in our local town. The proud Farney folk have fought back and damned the Meath and Cavan jerseys to the backbenches! We found our new found fame quite satisfying….we got our Monaghan back!! But in the past few week - there's been a noticeable re-emergence of the green and gold colour around home. A recent trip to Navan and regular trips up the N2 to Dublin witnessed a new found pride in the Meath colours (although not a fertiliser bag to be seen!). It was refreshing and drowned out the odd persistent horrible navy and blue alternative that dared to rear its head!! Look - we all have a duty for our next generation to restore pride in our respective county. I came home from Clones last Saturday evening battered and bruised but equally as proud to see the disappointment in my kids faces. God forbid they chose Brogan or Cluxton as their hero over McManus or Beggan - just because the media loves to push them that little bit more…but let's not go there. So while your pride might be dinted after Sunday - Meath are on an upward curve. You have to buy in to that. You need to invest in it. I've followed Meath club football for years and I know that your time is coming. You have my absolute permission to cross the border to Carrick thronged in yellow and green on the absolute condition that common order will have been restored and Meath football will have found its voice again to drown out the common enemy of blue and navy… who's name we dare not mention…#notVoldemort

Replying To Joxer:  "You must be 6 years old. You do realise that counties were much less well off than Dublin in the 90s and 00s. Oh and it may have struck you that Dublin is the capital, a quarter of the population lives there. It has always been the population centre. Peope just didn't appear on trees in the last 10 years. Whingers logic... - Dublin couldn't have gotten their act together in 2011 due to great organisation, hard work and shrewd appointments. It must have been all money - Dublin have a large population. How can this be fair when every other county has exactly the same population and there is no disparity between them? - money wins you Sam Maguire. It can't be explained by great grassroots work and organisation. The Brogans, Connollys, Cluxtons of this world were all manufactured when they were 8 and 9 back in 1996 when the GAA were throwing billions at Dublin. Oh wait! - Dublin couldn't have just put together a golden generation of players. I mean it's not possible. It has to be the money and the population. I mean, doesn't it. You need 1.6m to find 20 decent players. Ask Kerry. Oh wait! - our poor performance is all down to Dublin's money and population. I mean it's nothing to do with us. Dublin are great in Leinster so that explains why we're crap in Ulster, doesn't it?"
So good you posted it twice... You've just proven all 5 points - well done you !

Replying To Joxer:  "Some things are worth repeating. I think Monaghan should be more concerned about where their next manager is going to come from to be honest. Their exit from Ulster and then the backdoor has nothing to do with Dublin."
Do them blinkers ever come off at all? And do you always just refer back to the same delusional logic!

Delighted to see former Magheracloone and County man Shane Duffy win a Senior Championship medal with Ratoath in Meath to add to the Mick Duffy! Nice to see Monaghan folk influencing the game outside the County.

People seem generally content at drawing with Longford. Bit surprised. I know it's pre-season but if Division 1 is Meath's aspiration for this year then I would expect them to put Westmeath to the sword next weekend. Seems Roscommon are flying in Connaught.... I was at the Kildare game last year in Tullamore and the root of all evils was your kick-out strategy. Kildare dominated the midfield exchanges which as we know this is the basis of retaining possession and building a platform. I would hope they've learned from this. Retention of kick-outs is imperative to winning any game at any time of year.

Replying To Farney:  "Just some notes from yesterday.. The ref was poor in my opinion.. His blowing up for Stephen O'Hanlon for over carrying was the peak of his obvious cluelessness , but he allowed Tyrone to repeatedly collide with Monaghan players take them out of the movement of play, they should have gotten black cards this, as well as for pulling players down after a break was on.. plus you had Conor Meyler constantly getting in Stephen O'Hanlon's face giving him the Tyrone commentary on his play. none of these were were addressed. . Brian Dooher in the first half was constantly in linesman's face and the fourth official, When David Gough came over to that side of the pitch he stopped as he knew where Gough would have told him to go.. . The team are not reliant solely on Conor McManus, while he is a legend. Many of the Monaghan players burst a gut yesterday.. so many of them were heroes on the day... I just hope that the 13 day turnaround to the Derry game gives them enough time to recover and get patched up.. . Vinny got credit for his changes that he made... but he could have taken Karl off sooner. He had ran his legs off and given everything.. but he should have been off 5 minutes earlier than he was. . In the first half Rory Beggan was hitting kickouts long and we lost them to the giant Tyrone midfielders. He ignored the players running short, but in the second half, Kieran Hughes ran short and demanded the ball of Beggan, he didn't ignore him and passed the ball out to him. Maybe other players need to do the same with him. Kieran Hughes was magnificent yesterday!! . finally the Disabled Parking or Wheelchair Access at Healy Park is very poor.. I was with a person who is about to get a knee operation and has the blue badge.. After getting denied access to the ground, I had to leave her at the gates while I drove off to find a parking spot, one kind man helped her get her coat on while I was gone.. the worst part was having to climb the steps in the stand while people queued behind as we slowly made our way up the tight set of stairs, only later I found out that we could have went around the front of the stand. but there is no accommodation here to help or guide."
Good post. The two faces of Dooher were on show on the line. And the Tyrone malice was there for all to see. Hamsey's "hand" on Jones would see a 3-month ban in any other sport

Good luck to our own Shane Duffy and our friends in Ratoath next weekend. The Magheracloone support will be there in force... one step away from a unique Monaghan and Meath Senior championship double... assuming it hasn't been done before!!!

The team that started last Saturday showed 3 changes to the team that started against Mayo in the 1st week of February and 2 of the 3 that started that night were Neal McAdam a& Conor McCarthy so in truth only 1 change in that time. That's unsustainable!! By contrast Mayo had 8 starters yesterday from the same game. It's a long season at that level - if we expect a freshness at this time of year then we need to manage player welfare. The disappointment of Saturday's showing was the lack of intensity and tackling. Perhaps as Banty says - its hard to go back to well !!!

GAA Health Issues... More Than Just C-19 - 2 Like(s)
There is an alarming under appreciation for the impact of the current hiatus on the mental health of our young population - players and non-players. And the silence is deafening aside from some great coverage by RorysStories! We witnessed a number of sad incidents at the weekend around the country, none of which will be registered as C-19 related. Are their deaths any less relevant than official C-19 related deaths? While people debate the pros and cons of getting our games back, all the contention relates to the direct health impacts of such measures on C-19 transmissions. But the debate is bloody silent on the impact of non-play on the mental health of some younger players. For many players, the Gaa was their outlet from the real world and that outlet is not shut. A return to action on the pitch is a very delicate matter but the health considerations should not simply focus on C-19 transmissions but rather the far reaching consequences of no games.

Based on form - Armagh should be favourites... Based on reputation - Monaghan will be!! Reputation is a dangerous thing in football. Monaghan really need to start living up to theirs!!

Have to say the idea of promoting Monaghan businesses on the front of the jerseys is an absolutely brilliant initiative and one that the County Board should be applauded for. Presume Investec were on board with the initiative too so fair dues. Our brilliant wee County leading the way again....Others are sure to follow!

I think the most pleasing thing in today's victory is the new blood materializing. We seem to be able to unearth new talant who fit in seamlessly and I think it's largely down to the competitive nature of our club scene at all levels....despite Scotstown going for 5-in-a-row!!! Kearns last year, Boyle again at full back, Kerr, Gartland, Bannigan all taking their chance against the best team in the Country. O Hanlon clarifying what all the fuss is about. It's testament to club football in this County which is very competitive and acts as a playground for those looking to make a name for themselves. Great that we did it with Mansy from the bench and minus Wylie and K Hughes. Karl O Connell was not his usual marauding-self, will be like a new player next week! And didn't need to reach for the old hands if Dessie and Vinny. Good days work!

Best thing we can do now is support our County. We have a challenging period ahead - new management, retirements, blooding new players, sponsors moving on, standards dropping and probable resignation to a few years on the periphery without any glamour fixtures and victories. The cycle is inevitable but our County remains the same and we can't choose to celebrate victories like Salthill last year and ignore the less glamorous days ahead. Nobody wants to fall back to the dark days of the 90's when we were the whipping boys of Ulster. The players have always responded to the great support they get so while the team may be in transition - the supporters should not.... I'm looking forward to the new era… we might even get another trip to Waterford!!!

A League - Football 2019 - 1 Like(s)

Replying To jackhackett:  "What Gerry hasn't mentioned is that Monaghan have a completely different Championship structure as well which along with having practically no hurling is significant. Clubs (at least at senior level which I'm most familiar with) have a minimum of 5 hurling championship games in Meath. Their championship is along the lines of the Christy Ring structure, only guaranteeing clubs a minimum of 2 games. In Meath you're guaranteed 5 at present. They also don't have an equivalent to the Feis Fup which at present takes up 4 game days for most clubs and potentially 5 for a few."
Look each to their own! There's merits in both and what works in one county doesn't work in another. But if you wanna go down that route - we also play an Ulster league, our champ is real knock-out and there's a huge crossover of players from senior to 2nd team who play both ie we don't penalize a 2nd team player for playing five minutes in a senior championship by not allowing him to play any further in his actual grade... we reward them for 2nd team performances by giving them a run in the senior team! Anyway - that's that. It certainly wasn't my intention to dis either system - I see merits in both. I just preferrred longevity in the summer when I played and because our leagues are so competitive - they attract big crowds and are the basis for which our county team is currently performing. Strong competition for players makes them more adaptable at county level! Anyway - It's brilliant to see hurling flourish in Meath and long may it continue. Sounds like it's well respected too. We could really do with an injection of hurling love in Monaghan!!
