Anybody any idea who might be in the running.

well think a thanks to nick is in order first. As he said in his statement its a hell of a toll on the personal life and after many doubts in year one(including my own) he turned it around this year and got Meath up to where they need to be playing against the better teams.

As for new managers I don't think its going to be a quick one but be interesting to see if there are any outsiders interested..

I'd be looking outside the county. Pat Gilroy or Tommy Walsh from Kilkenny.

If they go outside the county what about Joe Quaid. Joe would know a lot about our opposition in both League and Championship. Another option would be Ryan Dwyer, current Longwood manager. He would have got to see first hand most of the contenders for the county this year.
Staying within the county, Paddy Kelly.

It would need to be a very lucrative deal to attract even a middle profile manager to Meath. If we were to appoint an outside manager, I reckon it would be someone cutting their teeth in management, someone in the mould of Jackie Tyrell perhaps. Would love to see DJ giving us a go.

First of all, credit to Nick. Hard to tell if he improved the team a lot over the two years, but the team is in no worse position than it was when he took the job. Winning the Christy Ring is probably the highlight of his tenure but isn't the achievement it was back in 2016 as it's now a 3rd tier competition.

What's required is a really big investment that i'm not sure our CB can afford or is willing to put it in. What we've had in terms of management over the past 5/6 years won't be enough to make a push for Div2 or Joe Mc.

Nobody stands out inside the county , very few genuine contenders around.
There is short supply of modern hurling trainers / coach local.
If looking at outsiders i would want one that knows the players and meath hurling.
Ryan odwyer is good example , but can they afford him?
We saw what happened when two random big names from kilkenny came last year.

I would worry who is left in charge of selecting this new manager as its a crucial time , need to stay in div 2a and joe mc cup , another return to christy ring and ending up in 2b in the league could send us back years.
County board wont want to put a huge amount of cash towards this.

Im surprised nick is gone , but best of luck to him.

The question here has to be is Meath hurling in a better place than it was when it was taken over 2 years ago, i thought we were getting closer to the joe mc donagh teams in 2016 having beaten Antrim and Kerry in championship, how much closer are we now to them?, how you think ryan o dwyer is a good example to bring hurling forward at county level when im sure this is his first year in management and even if its not his first year , not enough experience to be even considered.

I would say we are back where we were when nick took over , mayby with a little more experience , but no better or worse otherwise.

Ryan odwyer is just a example , i have no idea how good / bad he is and am in no way saying he is the answer.
Joe quaid would be fantastic , but would he want it.

All comes down to what ambition the county board have and how much money they are willing to back it with , that worries me a little.

Well with the footballers starting to improve i would assume the money available to the hurling will be zero . Add in the money needed to develop Pairc Tailteann and you be guaranteed it will be an internal appointment. I'm not saying an internal appointment is bad but I don't see any strong candidates at present meaning the county board will look to appoint some one who wont be a thorn in their side when it comes to demands and fixtures. In short an old school yes man.

McCullough is the answer. Has worked with these lads before, winning ring & league & since has moved on to win championship with ballyboden and last year was with the Dubs. Rumour his car has been spotted round kiltale too.

He was With the dubs this year and cant see him leave that role.
Also Cant see the county board funding somebody like that from october to june either.
Would be great choice but id be surprised if the county board will go for it , hes not the yes man they want.

Totally agree her. Footballers in div 1 of the league this year and the development of p.t the hurlers will hardly get a look in. They will want a manager that won't be an annoyance when it comes to fixtures. Would be great to get Joe quaid into the job. He has worked wonders with westmeath. Pleanty of big name Hurling men after coming available in the last few weeks but it's unfortunate that I doubt any of them will be looking to meath as potential jobs.
As regards where the team are now I think they might be slightly behind where they were when nick took over. There was so much hype and potential around the team when he started but I think a lot of the buzz dissappeard last year. Getting back to closer where we were 2 years ago but a big league campaign and be seen as a treat to teams in the Joe Mc is a must.

The first year of management is always going to be difficult, Nick's 5 losses in the JMcD was a huge learning curve. Starting at a higher level was always going to be difficult. He put over 40 hours/week into Meath Hurling. It took a year to mould the players into well oiled machine. Anyone who is on this forum is passionate about Meath Hurling. We all have our views on Club hurling. We need to get behind the new manager, wherever he comes from. We need to be calling the County Board out when they short change Hurling. Time to get Hurling people on the board. Best wishes to Nick in his future.

Over 200k s p ent on hurling teams in 2018 was stated at convention last December...seems to be a little more than lip service tbh

Well said. I know Andy Mcentee doesn't take a cent for managing the footballers.

Is that all hurling teams in the county or just the county teams. How does that compare to the football to give us some perspective.
