Replying To Evernal:  "Absolutely awful stuff today. Shocking performance but credit to Offaly they played some great stuff. Number 10 for Offaly was very very impressive some great running today he popped up everywhere.
Only saving grace was the impressive performance of Flanagan when he came on. Thought he steadied the ship lot of good running and some great distribution just a pity most of the others were not on his wavelength and missed his passes etc.
Newman was little off the pace should have buried his chance after McNamee missed his chance. Anyways it can only get better going forward nice to get a win in the Championship it's been a while!"
Is that a joke about Flanagan? Gave the ball away with almost every possession he had. So shaky on the ball. What Flanagan gives is a great option for kick outs, yet the ball was only kicked to him once from what I remember

No I am not delighted at all but when you have some people on here talking that we could afford to go out on the bear and still win

Replying To ROYALOPTIMIST:  "I know the team played poorly, but did anyone think that we changed our style slightly from the league in that we seemed to have more people behind the ball and didn't break as fast or as they say now "Transition" from defense into attack as well as we were earlier in the league? Maybe they have an eye on other games in the future and want to develop a different style. I could be wrong in this though.

We have to develop a primary and back up kick out strategy because it is killing us.

We will improve and no one will remember this game if we go on and have a long summer, and maybe it's better to get a kick on the backside now rather than later. It certainly should knock any complacency (if there was any) out of the team and that will be good."
Yes, I agree I think our style has changed slightly, definitely more defensive and not enough pace when breaking forward also we where trying to hit Newan and Oreilly with long ball in which didn't work, as the ball in was terrible and was cut out mostly. So it effectively rendered our inside forward line unless hence O'reilly end up been taken off. Any scores we got where when we carried to and ran directly at offaly ,rather than an long balls in working.
So whether the change is style was because they have one eye on other teams, or they dont want to be predictable or both I am not sure.

Replying To cabbage:  "I agree with you a lot of personal nature posts for some reason today. I prefer to read more game analysis by the people on here.

For my 2 cents I thought we defended in numbers ok enough but when it came to transitioning into attack there was no pace or intensity. Also poor transitioning of the ball from middle to final third. Finally a couple of players all having off days compared to their usual high standard."
We defended in numbers.......but not ok at one stage in the first half we had numbers back and Offaly were attacking from the stand side to the hospital end and there were two Meath players (I won't call them defenders) marooned in the hospital corner doing nothing, picking up nobody and not near the D where at least the would block a way to goal.

As for tracking ball carriers, there is no point in running along side him but not near enough to get a hand in to dispossess.

Also after a turnover we do not break smartly and at full tilt to get inside their cover. To my mind the beat way to achieve this is to sprint to their 13 m line but on the opposite wing to that the ball is being worked through, the opposition have then to send a defender or you could be lucky and two might momentarily pick you up therefore taking men out of the D which opens up space in front of goal.

A weird game where we just never clicked very like Longford last year. We all know we can play a lot better then that. I don't know what happened to be honest but probably a mix of Nerves , Pressure , tiredness . Big improvement needed for Carlow on sat week

Yes, very like the Lonford last year. But yet when we played Tyrone we where a completely different team.

We played awful yesterday and still got the win. There's no need to panic yet, the biggest noticeable difference was the complete lack of intensity. No forward creating turnovers. Never pinning them in with their kickouts. But look it we win. Judge them on the Carlow game, no need to sound massive panic bells yet

We do seem to rise our levels and improve when we play the bigger teams but lose our concentration against the teams that we should be beating. Were not going to win a Leinster or All Ireland but surely we can play better then that rubbish yesterday and be more consistent.

Replying To GBG:  "Very lucky to get through yesterday, Offaly didn't deserve to lose that game. Maybe the heavy session in Kerry went against Meath but if so I would suggest it wasn't the greatest idea by the management team.

I thought after watching the first 20 minutes of the league final that we had found a way to mix up the running game with a more direct approach. However yesterday we reverted to type and played such a negative, low risk, rugby league style running game. I have to believe that's the managments decision and the players are only following instructions.

I lost count the number of times we had a runner coming through the middle with a line of three or four supporting from behind rather than trying to get ahead of the ball carrier to create options. Inevitably we then run into trouble or our kick forward is intercepted as we only have 1 or max 2 options ahead of the ball.

We dragged 15 men behind the ball so often just inviting the Offaly team on us especially their wing and corner backs. Which was ironic as I felt our defenders did ok individually when 1 on 1, but it seems lads feel when extra numbers are back they don't need to actually do basic stuff like tackling.

Our kick outs were atrocious and Colgan had a 3/4 minute spell giving away 2/3 scores in a row that almost left Offaly out of sight. This is an area that hasn't improved in the last 3 years.

Overall it's hard to be positive looking forward. I really hope I'm wrong but I feel the style of football we are playing (negative, low risk, retain possession, running game) has been proven to bring respectability to weaker teams but will not allow a team to get near the stronger (Super 8) teams. Which is a shame as I think there's more in these players as they proved in the 1st half of the league final."
Taking on Kerry and getting hammered two weeks out from Championship was really daft idea. Management gone mad. Why they would play perhaps the best or any of top 3 teams at that point is bizarre. You risk knocking lads confidence and self belief and it looked like it yesterday. It also ties in with this notion that the Meath Management have bought Into the he hype and that we are away better than we are. We need to dumb it down completely, build and progress slowly and stop thinking we are going to beat Tyrone , Dublin , Mayo or Kerry. We won't . Struggled to beat Offaly and got beat last year by Longford . We are underdogs against Carlow, there is a good start

I know what you're saying but we have to face those teams at some stage, we are in division 1 next year, there's no avoiding them forever. Also we'll only get better by playing better teams and in fairness we should have beaten Tyrone last year, we threw that one away.

Anyway look we're past Offaly, they played out of their skin and we barely played at all and still got the result. It's not too often we've won playing badly in the recent past, now I know that's sort of clutching at straws for positives but we need every positive we can get.

If we perform against Carlow then I think we'll win, but if we don't then we'll be beaten, we won't get away with another performance like that, simple as.

In all honesty that was a game we would have lost over the past 8 years.

Thought it was 3 16 to 16. But you might be right. Seemingly 3 quick fire goals killed game in first half. Thought though it was last week ??

Ye I thinks that's one of the few positives I'd take from the game, I have little doubt we'd have lost that game in the previous few years. Once teams got a run at us at all we were finished.

We seem to be better at responding now but there's lots of work to be done before we play Carlow.

Responding - we got a lucky goal. A big high ball sent in and one of the smallest men in the field connected after the Offaly goalie mad a error. For God sake a simple game played sample. It was desperate and the lads looked tired. In the League final we collectively ran from the half back line but none of that yesterday.

You look yesterday at the kick outs and during the league they were a issue -why is this not been worked on.
Fullback line had a wall of Meath players on top of them that they could not see what was coming at them
Halfback - was strong at the end of the league - that line was busting out making the runs. What has the young Ryan fella done and what is the story with Padraic Harnan
Middle - Not working at all - Flanagan could not hold a ball and the ball to them was rare. Menton wasn't at the races at all
Half forward - no one up to anything. C O'Sullivan got rolled over in the first 10mins and it seemed to have deflated him for a fella we all know again that can run and deliver off but no not yesterday. Brian McMahon made some runs but not enough and Ben Brennan was way off the mark
Full forward - Not one of them made a contribution that is sufficient for Senior Football County Championship

Very disappointed in the team picked and the performance they looked tired and unfit and ball work very bad. Meath football is in a bad way

The reality is bar Dublin there's only a few points between any 2 teams in Leinster. Kildare only beat Wicklow by two. I thought Ofally were excellent. We were not but to be such a good Ofally performance while playing badly bodes well.

Carlow again will be tough but I'm backing us to make the semi final. The game shouldn't be neutral. It should be in Navan or Carlow. Why isn't there a home and away arrangement?

Was a disater of a game but Pros from yesterday what I can see were
-Bench made a big impact
-Coming from 4 points down with 10 mins to go to win shows character
-Winning when playing badly
-Got a bit of a tan

Harnan still not fit for 70 minutes. Ryan failed a concussion exam and was barred from playing.
