A native of Ardbraccan, Tommy won a Meath MFC medal during a short Gaelic football playing career. He was a member of the Kilberry team which defeated Kilskyre in the 1955 decider. Tommy emigrated to England shortly after but maintained a strong interest in football, always supporting local teams as well as the county team.
