Byrne, Tommy


Tommy Byrne, whose untimely death took place early in the year gone was a stalwart of Dunshaughlin teams during the 1980s. As an underage player he won an Under 14 medal with Culmullen in 1979 and went on to win a number of underage county titles with Dunshaughlin Community College.

As an adult player he was one of Dunshaughlin's most accurate forwards during an era when the club struggled to make an impact in the intermediate grade after demotion from senior. His and the club's only appearance in the knock-out stages during the decade came in 1986. Tommy, popularly known as 'Slim', was also a fine soccer player, regularly lining out for one of the Dunshaughlin clubs of that era in the Meath and District League and was a committed West Ham United supporter.  

His nephew Niall is currently a regular on the Black and Amber senior team, his niece Méabhbh lines out with Royal Gaels and Meath underage teams while brother Benny coaches Royal Gaels. He is survived by his brothers Tony, Joe, Paddy, Benny, Paul and sisters Marie, Anne and Irene,jj nieces and nephews.
