Carney, Eithne

Nee McGee, Eithne was the wife of Mayo GAA legend Jackie Carney. The westerners have won the All Ireland senior crown on three different occasions and Jackie was involved each time, 1936 as a player and 1950 and 51 as manager/coach. The Ballina native also holds a record, shared with Mick O Dwyer, of winning seven NFL medals, the famous six in a row from 1934 to 1939 and again in 41. The couple met in Ballina in 1945, married the following year and Eithne, 15 years Jackie's junior, returned to her native Kells on her husband's death in 1984. She was 93 years of age.
