Reigning champions Garrycastle put in a strong second half showing to get the better of neighbours and rivals Athlone in the Westmeath SFC first round at Tubberclair yesterday.

Former Aussie Rules recruit Ray Connellan was causing all sorts of problems for Garrycastle as they trailed 0-8 to 2-3 at the break. But on the turnaround, they began to assert their dominance around the middle and found the scores to record a 0-17 to 2-7 win.

At TEG Cusack Park, goals courtesy of Ronan O’Toole, Kevin Regan, Fola Ayorinde, Rory Sheahan and TJ Cox handed St Loman's a landslide victory over Tyrrellspass by 5-9 to 0-10. Loman's were well ahead at half time, 2-6 to 0-4.

Meanwhile, Frankie Dolan's Rosemount had to dig deep to defeat Castledaly 1-11 to 2-6 in Moate on Saturday.
