MHL Div 1B: Big win for Trim

February 17, 2019

Trim's James Murray

Trim 9-13 Kilmessan 0-8

Trim opened their 2019 hurling campaign with a home fixture against near neighbours Kilmessan.

The home side included in their ranks seven players who had started in the Minor A hurling victory of 2018 and the team was completed by the next wave of rising stars to grace the red and white of the St Lomans Park outfit.

Trim opened brightly with James Murray producing the first score within a minute of the throw in. Conor Mc Keown soon had the ball in the Kilmessan net and there followed a further two points from James Murray after some very good inter play and, indeed, sound defending from, in particular, Evan De Courcy Tobin and Adam Boyle.

Sean Foley followed up with another goal for the home side and by the time Kilmessan produced their first score in the eleventh minute, the home side had raced into a healthy lead of 2-3 to 0-1.

Trim's next goal was somewhat fortuitous as James Murray's attempt from a '65 deceived everyone and found its way all the way to the net. Another pointed free from Murray was followed by Kilmessan's only second score and it was that man Murray again to convert '65's in the 22nd & 23rd minute. While Kilmessan were playing not too badly in the centre of the field, and had some lovely touches, they were finding Trim way too sharp and, with a wind advantage, the home side stretched further ahead with a Josh Harris goal and a further point from James Murray right on the stroke of half time. Kilmessan having converted their third point just before.

Half Time score; Trim 4-7; Kilmessan 0-3.

The second half was barely under way when James Murray struck for the opening goal and Sean Foley also found the back of the net in the third minute. Kilmessan had a pointed free but Sean Foley pointed again before Kilmessan, having their best spell, followed with two points. James Murray added another point in the ninth minute and there was a barren spell of 10 minutes play before Trim struck again with goals from James Foley and Oisin Hackett (2). Kilmessan never gave up but were met by stout defending in that second half particularly by Conor McGinley and Harry Cottrell. They did raise another white flag before what was arguably the score of the match when Trim sharpshooter James Murray pointed beautifully from a side line cut. Oisin Hackett had another Trim point before the visitors had their final score. Joey Cole moved from mid field into the forwards and produced the final two scores for the home side.

Final Score: Trim 9-13; Kilmessan 0-8
