Trim impress in Ashbourne

Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-8  Trim 3-16

On the back of a bumper 2018 for Trim hurling, winning a minor, u21, Junior championship and reaching the county senior hurling final, Trim began their competitive 2019 hurling season in impressive style in Ashbourne on Saturday evening.

The experienced and knowledgeable management team of CJ Murtagh along with selectors Alan Douglas and Sean Colgan will be very pleased how their team performed and the attitude they showed throughout the match. Referee Mark Reilly let the game flow and both teams took advantage of this on a evening with perfect conditions for hurling. Eight Trim players made there adult hurling debut on the night which is very promising. Aaron Winters and Jack Cottrell also made a return after both took a year out. Winters got Trim off to a great start with an early goal which was finished in great style, reminding everyone of the talent he can bring to Trim teams.

Cottrell scored a point in each half, he also won and turned possession over throughout the match, his skill level and physicality both much improved since last seen in the 2017 junior hurling final. Peter Farrell covered a lot of ground in the forward line scoring a total of 9 points. The athletic Dylan Farrell contributed a total of 1-2. Conor Quigley scored a first half wonder goal after a great solo effort running through the Ashbourne defence to blast home for Trim’s second goal. Ian Birmimgham got his first adult score splitting the uprights from a tricky angle close to the sideline. Mikey Cole tormented the Ashbourne defence, he made himself a good option every time the solid Trim defence broke out with the ball. Ben Holden finished the game off with two well taken late points.

Senior manager Neil Cole was at the game and he was given plenty of food for thought from all 20 players that were on the field ahead of a busy hurling season.
