Rising Galway hurling star Jack Canning is to pursue a rugby career in Australia early in the New Year.

A nephew of senior talisman Joe and the star of Galway's All-Ireland MHC success in 2017, the Portumna youngster confirmed to Pundit Arena that he will join the Northern Suburbs Rugby Club in Sydney in January and will spend at least nine months Down Under, thus putting paid to the prospect of him graduating to the Galway senior team next year. 

“I played Senior Cup Rugby with (Cistercian College) Roscrea for three years. I started when I was 13, I played in Ballinasloe for three years and I went to Roscrea then,” the 19-year-old said. 

“Hurling will always be there but I said, ‘why not? I’ll give it a go’. I want to travel a bit, a new adventure.

“I actually can’t wait for it now, it’s only seven or eight weeks away, it’s flying. Not many people know about it and I really am looking forward to it. It should be exciting, a new path. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out but if it does,

"God knows where it will take me.”
