Awards: Senior Club Footballer of the Year

December 13, 2017

Mark McCabe, Barry Dardis and Padraig McKeever

There were some outstanding games at senior club level in 2017 and a number of performers stood out. We pick our top players from the year gone by.

Simonstown completed a two-in-a-row of championship titles with Wolfe Tones landing Division 1 league honours and Donaghmore/Ashbourne the Feis Cup. Summerhill reached the senior final while Gaeil Colmcille qualified for a fourth successive semi-final.

Our shortlist comprises:

Mark McCabe (Simonstown Gaels): the goal scoring sensation of the senior championship, perhaps no player did more to get Simonstown to another county final. In their two close contests this year - against St Colmcilles in the opening round and Dunboyne in the quarter-final, it was McCabe who led the charge and drove his team mates on.

Barry Dardis (Summerhill): the former county minor led the Summerhill attack with aplomb and scored crucial goals along with way, none more so that his strike against O'Mahony's in the quarter-final. With a real poacher's eye for a score and the ability to pick out a team mate, he was the outstanding centre forward in the senior club scene.

Padraig McKeever (Simonstown): there has been no better forward on the big occasion for the past two seasons as the Simonstown corner man made history by claiming back-to-back senior final man-of-the-match awards. Right foot or left, he tormented defences all year and no matter what system opposition teams used against him, the scores kept on coming.

Our choice as Senior Club Footballer of the Year is Padraig McKeever who despite the brilliance of the other two nominees is a worthy winner.
