Louth's Wayne Kierans

Wayne Kierans has emerged as the favourite to take over from Pete McGrath as manager of the Louth senior footballers.

According to the Dundalk Democrat, O'Connells clubman Kierans - who served as selector with McGrath and managed the U-20s this year - is nominated for the vacancy along with former managers, Peter Fitzpatrick and Colin Kelly.

Kelly - who recently stood down as manager of Westmeath - has ruled himself out of the running while question marks hang over outgoing Fine Gael TD Fitzpatrick's future intentions.

Manager for the infamous 2010 Leinster final defeat to neighbours Meath, Fitzpatrick revealed last week that he wouldn't be contesting the next General Election.

Current London boss Ciaran Deely, meanwhile, has also been nominated to succeed McGrath.
