Pope to hold up Mayo club championships

June 13, 2018

Pope Francis is set to visit Ireland in 2018.

Pope Francis' visit to Knock in August will disrupt the Mayo club football championships.

The popular pontiff is due to visit Knock on Sunday, August 26th and it is anticipated that up to 50,000 pilgrims will flock to the East Mayo village.

Security arrangements for the weekend will leave the county in lockdown and almost certainly lead to the postponement of all GAA matches over that weekend, when the second round of the county SFC and IFC was due to be played.

As the following weekend is All-Ireland football final weekend, the second-round games are now likely to be shifted to September 8th / 9th, which will mean that 32 clubs in Mayo will be waiting an unbelievable 20 weeks between their first-round and second-round championship matches.
