Henry Shefflin is in pole position to fill the void when Brian Cody decides to call it a day as Kilkenny manager, according to his former team-mate Tommy Walsh.

Cody is currently putting the finishing touches to preparations for his 21st league campaign as Cats supremo while Shefflin has made a big impression along the sidelines with Ballyhale Shamrocks who will face Ballygunner in the last four of this year’s All-Ireland Club SHC.

“I’d say Henry would probably be your most obvious choice. He’s brilliant with people,” Walsh remarked to the Irish Independent.

He added: “He is a winner because he has won so much for club and county, his first year in management he wins a Kilkenny club which is so difficult to win. He goes on and wins a Leinster club, so straight away now when people see him, (they say), ‘There’s a man that can win things’.

“If you can win something early in your career it gives you that confidence for ever more.”

For the moment, Cody will leave no stone unturned in his bid to add a 12th All-Ireland SFC title to his illustrious managerial CV.

“Brian has done so much, not just on winning, but he develops a culture inside in Kilkenny that he will be there for as long as probably he wants at this stage.”
