Castletown Geoghegan celebrate

The Westmeath SHC final will go ahead as planned this afternoon despite the death of a member of a very prominent hurling family in one of the competing clubs.

The Castletown-Geoghegan club was plunged into mourning yesterday when Maura Clarke passed away after a long battle with illness. Maura was the wife of club treasurer Eamon and mother of Eamon Og, who is part of the Castletown-Geoghegan panel. Her older sons Pat and Fintan also represented the club with distinction while the Clarke name is synonymous with the club, with Eamon along with his brothers having all won SHC medals with the black and ambers and also represented Westmeath at every level.

In spite of this, Castletown's showdown with holders Clonkill will go ahead in TEG Cusack Park at 3.30pm, with a minute's silence set to be observed for Maura before the throw-in.
