Sean Cavanagh reckons Jim Gavin could be taking a risk in welcoming Diarmuid Connolly back into his squad for the remainder of the championship.

Gavin confirmed after his side’s Super 8s’ victory over Cork last Saturday evening that Connolly was back training with the All-Ireland champions, creating extra buzz around the capital as his team bid for a historic fifth Sam Maguire Cup in-a-row.

However, Cavanagh, a three-time All-Ireland winner with Tyrone, seems somewhat sceptical over the St Vincent's star's return. 

“He’s (Gavin's) made them from a city team to almost like a county team in terms of their ethos, the way they are so level-headed and how they never seem to get flustered,” Cavanagh wrote.

“To bring back Connolly looks to be a bit of a risk and may upset that. You wonder is Gavin fearful of being nipped in a semi-final or a final.

“Sometimes, a thing move that can do more harm than good. Dublin don’t seem to have too many weaknesses, but maybe there’s something behind the scenes Gavin in worried about.

“I think Connolly is going to be a 5-, 10-, or 15-minute man if needed in an All-Ireland semi-final or final. It goes to show the embarrassment of riches Dublin have, that they can afford to do that at this stage of the season.”
