Westmeath chairman Billy Foley has hit out over the lack of exposure the inaugural Joe McDonagh Cup received this year.

The new second tier All-Ireland senior hurling championship slipped under the radar as the race for the Liam MacCarthy Cup took centre stage.

However, there were some magnificent games in the Joe McDonagh Cup which was eventually won by Carlow who beat Westmeath in the final at Croke Park.

Speaking to delegates at last weekend’s county convention, the Westmeath Independent wirtes that Foley stated that more needs to be done to boost the profile of the competition.

“The Joe McDonagh Cup is a fine competition but it needs to be marketed much better next year,” stressed Foley who returned unopposed to the position for another term.

Foley added that financially the county were heading in the right direction, but they still had a lot of work to do to.
