A well-known GAA official in Galway believes the practice of granting three-day bar licences over the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta weekend contributed to the death of two young people in a road crash last June.
Former Galway football board chairman and Connacht Council delegate John Joe Holloran has voiced his opposition to the practice after Sean Halloran from Clonbur and Orla O'Malley from Cross, who were both aged 20, died in a single-vehicle collision after attending the annual festival of football in Tournakeady, Co. Mayo.
The tragedy cast a shadow over the June Bank Holiday weekend tournament which was won by An Ghaeltacht of Kerry.
"The practice in recent years now has been getting out of hand and it was devastating for two young people this year. It has left a mark on those families for the rest of their lives," Holloran is quoted as saying at last Monday's Galway GAA convention in the Connacht Tribune.
