New Offaly hurling boss Kevin Martin says the Faithful County have been "been painful to look at" in the last couple of years.

This past season saw Offaly exit the All-Ireland championship off the back of defeats to Galway and Waterford where they conceded 0-33 and 1-35 respectively.

Tullamore native Martin, who was appointed as the county's new manager last month, says there's plenty of work to be done.

"You are looking at your county, you want to see them improve things and that's why I've gone in," he is quoted saying by the Irish Sun.

"It's been painful to look at for the last few years. I don't believe we are as bad as the last few years, so I think I can improve it.

"We are all guilty of giving out about our own county teams. I would have been at it myself over the last couple of years and people would have been saying 'Well sure go do something about it so'.

"It's always an honour to train your county. A lot of work has to be done but, in fairness, the players are after buying into it so far."
