O'Mahony: it's a toss of a coin

John O'Mahony isn't reading too much into Mayo's poor league campaign ahead of their eagerly-anticipated Connacht SFC clash with arch rivals Galway.

20 years on from guiding the Tribesmen to the first of two All-Ireland successes, O'Mahony believes his native county will be a different proposition on May 13th.

"Mayo had a difficult league, there's no doubt about that," he remarked to the Western People.

"Their worst performances were probably against Galway and Tyrone. They didn't have a fair number of talismans or leaders available to them, with Lee Keegan's injury, Keith Higgins playing with the hurlers, Chris Barrett and Brendan Harrison not playing and so on.

"But what Mayo showed was their resilience and experience to get out of the jam. They showed that in Donegal. You think about Kevin McLoughlin's late point; he had very little time and space but he still went for it. That experience will stand to them in MacHale Park.

"If you take it on the evidence you'd think Galway are well ahead here in terms of form. But I think we need to look a bit wider than that. I think it's a toss of a coin to be honest."
