Byrne recalls chance meeting with Harry Potter

Dublin's Davy Byrne lifts the Sam Maguire Cup and inset Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe raises the Tom Markham Cup in 2012.

Dublin defender Davy Byrne will never forget the night Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe turned up on his doorstep.

Speaking at an AIG promotion event yesterday, Byrne - who was part of Dublin's five-in-a-row All-Ireland winning team last month - recalled his surprise when Radcliffe landed back at his house on the night after he captained Dublin to All-Ireland MFC success in 2012.

“A few of the lads bumped into him on Grafton Street. I wasn’t there, a few lads had already come back to my house," he explained.

“It wasn’t that late and the guys started talking to Harry Potter — Daniel Radcliffe. They were saying, ‘We’re going to go back to the captain’s house if you want to come’.

“And he said, ‘Yeah, sure, go for it’. So I got a phone call from Conor Mullally. And he was saying, ‘We’re with Harry Potter in a taxi and we’re coming back to your house’. I didn’t believe him in the slightest. So I said, ‘Yeah, very good’ and hung up.

“Then the doorbell rings 15 minutes later and Mullally is looking at me, going, ‘Harry Potter is right outside your house’.

“I walked outside and he was standing in the front garden. So I invited him in, then I went upstairs to wake my parents. You can imagine the look on my mother’s face when I was shaking her saying, ‘Daniel Radcliffe is downstairs’.

“I think she thought I had too many drinks! But she came downstairs and made him a cup of tea. He stayed for a good hour and a half, two hours. I had a good chat with him. He’s a good guy.”
