Westmeath hurlers can make an impact on HL1A despite their heavy defeat to Galway, according to Lake County manager Shane O’Brien.

A seventeen-point defeat to the Tribesmen was not the start that Westmeath were looking for and even though they played two-thirds of the match with just 14-men, following Aonghus Clarke’s first half dismissal, they were no match for a slicker Galway side.

O’Brien is confident that there is more to come from his players as they prepare to host Waterford at TEG Cusack Park on Sunday afternoon.

“I know the character of this group and I know they will bounce back next Sunday,” stressed O’Brien. He added: “We’re very excited about the upcoming fixtures. It’s a massive occasion for the Westmeath hurling public to have their home games in Mullingar.

“We just hope that the county gets behind the team against next Sunday against Waterford. We’re moving on to that and take whatever learnings from this and look forward to that game on Sunday.”
