Cork secured their first win of the Allianz HL Division 1A campaign at the third attempt last night and, afterwards, manager John Meyler talked about striking the right the balance between youth and experience.

“We set out with a purpose at the start, be competitive, try win matches and try to introduce new players,” he told eir Sport.

“We’ve introduced one or two players, Tim O’Mahony has really settled in at centre-back. The older players are still contributing as well, Patrick Horgan and those, so it’s trying to get the balance between the young and the old fellas and trying to win matches and be competitive as well.”

The ever-reliable Horgan shouldered much of the scoring responsibility against the Banner County.

“That’s what Horgan is there for. He’s a fantastic free-taker, brilliant hurler and we need Conor Lehane, Aidan Walsh, Jamie Coughlan and those and it was great to see Alan Cadogan back after a long lay-off. He’ll contribute next week against Limerick I have no doubt.”
