Today was our annual "take a hammering in Ulster day" for our club champions. The depressing state of club football in this county is not going to change until the number of clubs is reduced significantly. We have far too many clubs for such a small county which dilutes the talent available to teams.

But this will not change, the appetite isn't there to make the hard calls."
In all fairness, ramor weren't hammered, they were level with 6 mins to go, but yes 2 many senior teams.

In fairness a start has been made to rebalance the senior championship, relegating 3 teams. Should have happened a long time ago.

There's no respect for club football. Y our CB. Players hanging around waiting for county players to be released. An county players not involved in the team directly still not allowed to play club football. Mayo county final was Saturday .. Dublins is next Saturday. Both those contested the AF. Our county final was last week and we went out of the qualifiers in July.. so it took 3 months to run off our Senior Championship? Something wrong somewhere.

Our county final was three weeks ago. If the Mayo game in Connaught finishes a draw the replay is following day. Donegal intermediate champs played Ulster game 19 hours later. It's not just a Cavan problem. It's a national problem. Our club scene is in the process of becoming more balanced but Croke Parks view of club players is nothing but a disgrace.

That's not a solution though. Merely moving the deck chairs on the Titanic. The unpalatable truth is we need to force amalgamations for the greater good of Cavan football. Unfortunately we have too many clubs for a small county. In population terms we're broadly similar to Monaghan who have just 75% of the number of clubs we have. Monaghan's club teams are competitive in Ulster because the available talent isn't diluted by having a surplus amount of clubs.

Even if we have amalgamations only single clubs can go forward. I would think permanent amalgamations. For a start one parish one club but as you say because of grounds being upgraded unlikely. For example the two senior finalists should have an extra bit added to them.

Too many teams in senior and intermediate. 10 teams are enough in each. CB are right to reduce the number with another 3 being relegated next year . That will bring it from 16 back to 12 in 2 years . Arva won the intermediate with 16 teams in senior. So they are the 17th best in cavan in championship. In monaghan it's the 11th best team . That's where we need to get to . Defo going the right way .

Yes, I should have been clearer, I mean amalgamations that will last permanently. It's a tough pill to swallow, but we all know there are parts of the county where too many clubs are crammed into a small area.

I agree 100 percent. Couple examples Ramor and Maghera should be one club. Castlerahan and Munterconnaught. Lacken and Ballinagh.

Hard luck to our clubs yesterday. Nail on head is there are far too many clubs in our county which dilutes the quality.
For example I believe Arva Cornafean and Killeshandra only make up a parish between the 3. They would be 1 club in any other county.
Real eye opener yesterday as regards standard difference between us and Tyrone at club level. In Breffni Cornafean completely outclassed. What I thought was a good inter team in arva were convincingly bet in Omagh by what I believe are a serious outfit and will take some stopping. Ramor put up the best show and perhaps if they had another week to prepare things may well have been different, Ado a huge loss for the early on too.

You could add Corlough and Templeport to that as well.

Lacken and ballinagh would be a fair strong senior team, Killishandra and cornafean, baileboro and knockbride, Drumlane and belturbet. More examples.

These clubs won't join up . They all have club grounds ,ect . It's easy to talk here but reality is another thing.

Clubs have their history and would find it hard to give it up,

The problem with clubs joining up is that some of the weaker players won't get playing. Clubs are about more than winning . They are about getting young people involved in sports and the benefits that has for their development as people, learning to play as a team player etc. While we all want to be winners we also want our clubs to be places for people of lesser abilities to have a role.

clubs could join up..then have a good senior/intermediate team and also a good junior/intermediate team, depending on the clubs. The teams could play on each clubs pitch on alternate home games..or the 1st team on one pitch, 2nd team on other pitch etc if teams wanted to get used to a ground and thus have 'home' advantage due to familiarity? this might help the better players progress due to increased competition and playing against stronger teams, it would give games to peripheral players and entice them to train, training's would be better, matches would be better...

Any reason why Templeport should be joined with anyone or are you just picking neighbouring clubs and saying they should be joined up? Junior Champions last year and won their first game in Ulster, narrowly lost the semi final. They reached U14, U16 and Minor Finals this year, the B team got to the final too. Solid numbers turning out at every age group.

Corlough are just about hanging in there as a club and may well fail to field a team in the near future. Most likely to join with Swad as they're joined at every level underage.
