Total revamp of the club scene needed

s goldrick why should we expect whoever is senior champions next year to be able to compete for the Ulster club title, the competition has been running since 1968 - that is 47 years - and no Cavan club has ever won it, and we have had 4 make the final, last time being 20 years ago. its time to admit there is a problem with the standard of football in Cavan.

I don't think we should "expect" anything. however we should hope that the cavan champions of 2016 will be more competitive than the 2015 champions were.

If we fail to change then we can expect outcomes to be remain pretty much as they are. Hope is great . I hope to win Euromillions this weekend.

Our Club Competition structures have left Cavan SFC Teams in particular uncompetitive at Ulster level.

I fear that our County AGM will be dominated by our Financial circumstances and we will rumble on with the same tired system which has failed us continously.

We need to develop footballers who are not afraid to win.

in Cavan the clubs only think about their own little corner and their own little local rivalries.

These two lines for me sum up all that is wrong with Cavan football,I think most are in agreement that things need to change, but they won't as the clubs won't allow them to.There's many examples of this in the last few years, like how we've ended up with 17 teams in the senior championship (ok it's changing next year), the reason we have a Div 1A & 1B ,Why some senior clubs junior teams weren't let compete in the Junior championship.Just on that last point alone in 1968 Crosserlough won the Senior Championship guess who won the intermediate? yes Crosserlough also.

The problem is that Cavan have bought into this manual coaching at grass roots and it has filtered right up to senior level. All these so-called development squads by the same manual coaches are resulting in today's situation.
Bin the manual and bring in the imaginaries with ideas and their way to move forward.

The club year is way too long and it's the county players who suffer . They come out of a tough year with the county and are straight into the club for 3mote month. Once it finishes the county starts again and the circle starts again . Young lads at minor and u21 then have to play their respective club championship. How can we expect young lads to be able to perform at a high level with every team they play on . Too many young lads will lose interest by 21-22 and won't be any use to any one any more . There needs to be a common sense approach when it comes to managing young lads because all the good ones are playing too much football and will lose interest !

Baileborough the last Cavan team to reach an Ulster Club final in 1995, haven't been a Senior team in a long time. Cavan won the Ulster title 2 years later with a few of those players playing big roles.

so i assume cavan is the only county where this happens? The lads in Dublin/cork/galway who play both a high level of both football and hurling with their clubs and whose county teams in both hurling and football go alot further than cavan prob get it handy compared to the cavan county lads..

Imagine playing a senior county football championship final in November sure it's no wonder Kerry lost the All Ireland. The second link shows that the Kerry county board also have their critics, although you can be sure if South Kerry won you wouldn't have heard too much complaining from Dingle.

Here is how I think changes should be made to club scene. Reduce leagues to eight teams playing twice home and away. Scrap the Breffni. Reduce the amount of teams in the senior championship to tighten quality and put more teams in junior in order to improve its quality (although Templeport are a good outfit). Maybe tweak numbers in intermediate. And now for the controversial bit. Reduce the amount of teams overall in county if possible. I don't like naming teams but Maghera should be joint with Ramor fully as one example. Having two or three clubs in a parish is ridiculous.

People going on about how good Kerry championship as an examplor grinds my gears. In recent years we have had teams from Westmeath and Clare in all Ireland club final and Antrim and Roscommon champions. There is no connection between standard of club championship and the county team. Also no other county has that system and it hasn't done Crossmaglen, Corofin or St. Vincents any harm coming through a normal club championship. This year also had shown it has its faults with no winner decided yet and Legion playing Nemo Sunday.

To have any chance of progression in Ulster you need to get a good group of quality players all at the one time. Cavan Gaels at their peak had it and were as good as anyone in Ulster but discipline let them down and unlucky mistakes. Really should have bet Galls when they won the All Ireland. Also people talk about needing a challenge before provincial, Crossmaglen are really challenged in Ulster and they do ok.

That last part should have read Crossmaglen get no challenge in Armagh.

doratheexplorer you make very good point about there being far too many clubs, several of us on here have already made this pint, but its now too late to force clubs to combine as one, like Maghera joining Ramor. The time for that was before every club developed their grounds and facilities. And even then how could it be enforced, we seen about 20 years ago when Kill and Drung almost merged how such petty things as what color the kit would be, was used by those opposed to the merger to rally support to stop it.
Cavan has far too many clubs, and with far too many of them having poor quality teams, with far too many of them over estimating the quality of their team or players, you find many will tell you that there is little difference in the standard between Junior and Senior.
We see it every year that whoever wins or does well in the Junior championship saying they have two or three guys who should be on the Senior county team.
the reason many want a Kerry style championship is cos it would finally give a platform for all players, regardless of the standard of their club, to prove they are good enough for Senior Championship football and so when called up to the county they are not having to make the giant step from Junior Club football to Senior Inter County Football. And so would help improve not only the standard of club football in teh county but all the senior county team.
We really do need proper amalgamations of clubs to play in the Cavan Senior Championship, not just one or two club amalgamations, South Kerry team/squad is made up from 13 clubs. Why can we not see a West Cavan team, all clubs from Shannon Gaels maybe even as far as Cornafean, imagine Kingscourt having Balileboro, Shercock and mabye even more combined, Cavan Gaels joining up with Drumalee and Killygarry, then Mullahoran, Gowna Lacken nd Ballinagh. Cootehill, Drung, Kill, Drumgoon, - do this right across the county- have a senior championship with 8 teams, if taken seriously and run right all 8 teams would be of a much higher quality than any club side we have seen in Cavan ever.
I would even go further and where any of these 8 amalgamations have the numbers allow them to name a totally separate squad to play in the Intermediate championship, where players can not change squads in that season.

I'm not against amalgamations as such. I just feel a more permanent solution would be joining of some clubs. Improves quality underage too, can put in better quality coaching structures, etc.... Amalgamations cause problems with one team wanting their players, who'll manage etc. Also thrown together at last minute. Why Kerry can do it is there is actually a regional divide.

Yes. Joining clubs. It's drastic and it's radical, but Cavan football is in such a poor state it needs radical measures. You could throw a stone between Ballinagh, Arva, Cornafean, Killeshandra and Lacken. It's beyond ridiculous in that particular region. 5 Clubs when a Maximum of 3 is all that is needed.

Of course there will be resistance but all current clubs are smaller clubs joined. A generational thing will hold it back. Maghera should join with Ramor and Castlerahan and Munterconnaught another.

as good an idea as it is, clubs merging will not happen, not now, the time has passed for that. Every club now has a good pitch and facilities, the time to merge was before this happened. As I pointed out earlier, the last clubs in Cavan to try and merge were Kill and Drung, and petty stuff like what color the kit would be was used to scupper the merger. That was long before either club had decent grounds.
Killeshandra, Arva and Cornafean can no longer even agree to amalgamate at under age level, so what chance of there ever being a merger.

It don't matter how much sense it makes for clubs to merge, there is far too much vested interest for it to happen, for example only one chairman needed, only one committee needed, one first team manager, etc etc etc, and that don't even take into account the other elephant in the room, players who would not get on the merged team, and the family of said players would all be opposed.

When Ramor were winning Senior titles and Maghera were having to field guys in their 40's just to make up 15 and played on a kip of pitch with no dressing rooms, and despite amalgamating at under age level, merger was totally ruled out by Mac Finns, so don't even dream it will happen now.

the only way we will ever see clubs close now is if they actually run out of members. and what chance of that happening.

Yeah I know I'm being naive but there would be some people in all clubs would like a change but the older generation definitely wouldn't want it.
