Clontibret have a great record of Senior Championships down the years - 15 I think.

What are the other teams in that parish shaggylegend? Is there a town team among them?

Tomsmith here

Well Samuel I can tell you that the Gaels are very proud people and while not very well fixed for Sunday we will fly the flag for Cavan as we always do in Ulster.
One thing for sure we will give it a real go and I understand that we are nearly at full strength and the Gaels will come out on top bar a few bad decisions

In the parish ya have Cremartin and Doohamlet. Doohamlet got relegated from senior to Intermediate this. There is no town team is a rural area that happen to produce excellent footballers and a never say die attitude.

32 Clubs in Monaghan so 10 teams at Senior probaly works well. Co board has a very laissez attidude letting clubs ie: Mountugent up to Intermediate without winnig Junior and Crosserlough up to Senior without winning Intermediate championship, If that is suppose to improve the standard it didn't work,

There are only 29 football clubs in Monaghan, split with 10 Senior, 10 Intermediate and 10 Junior. Scotstown also have a team in the Junior league. I subscribe with the theory that Town teams can never garnish the commitment and passion that rural teams can, not in Monaghan anyway.

The same in Cavan probaly, but then hard to know as there hasn't much to shout about from Cavan clubs in Ulster. Each team would train as hard as the next, maybe more toughness to a rural team.

I'm inclined to agree with drumlinbelt that rural clubs have greater intensity and commitment although I always thought Kingscourt and Ramor had all that in their good years. I suppose you can't generalise like that and plenty of people will disagree.

As regards performance in Ulster I can't figure it out. I know from talking to people in various clubs that some clubs at least don't put much into the Ulster championship for a variety of reasons. Clubs that win titles for the first time in a long stretch just show up and don't bother much. Sometimes key players opt out for a variety of reasons, especially students. A few clubs I know are renowned for their celebrations. The list is a long one. It seems from talking to people around the county that there's no great enthusiasm for winning in Ulster in a lot of places.
I don't know why that is. Maybe it's in the water!!

But a big enthusiasm to knock the Senior Co management when a few results go wrong.

Cavan and Fermanagh the only 2 Counties in Ulster never to have won the Ulster Senior Club.

Good luck to the Gaels. I think they will be up against it, they have had more physical teams in the past and that didn't go well, this it a more lighter team, and wet conditions may not suit them. But we'll see.

Best of luck to the Gaels. I'd worry about their physicality this year; they almost came a cropper against Lacken in the Quarter-Final when they had to deal with the strength of the Lacken team in the drawn game. Conditions were very good that night unlike to day. Should be a good football game all the same.

5pts down at half time. 9 to 4. johnston with 3, Meehan with 1. Surely they have to bring on Dunne...

Thats our three champions gone, 4 games between the 3 of them. speaks volumes about the quality of our County championships. Not good enough

Listening to the game on the radio the damage was done in the first half, 5pts at half time down and making costly mistakes. A gallant fightback in the second half, maybe Slaughtneill eased up too.

Another below par campaign by the Clubs in Ulster.

The Gaels I felt were better equipped for a challange at an Ulster title a few years ago when they had the likes of Enda King Cormac Nelligan, Sean Reilly, Gavin Duffy, Pauric Smith Darren Rabbite, Physical players but good footballers too
Probaly unlucky that the best team in Ireland was in the same province Crossmaglen also another year running St Galls very close who went onto win the All Ireland the following March, poor dicipline cost them that day

I think they have alot of players who are much of a muchness now. Maybe same problem with Co Senior team.

Foolsgold they are an average team with nothing to offer. You are right they had their chance several years ago blew it with very poor discipline tried to tell the referee how to do his job. Sadly that ill discipline is still there and will be going forward. Peter Canavan has got on his CV he brought a team to a senior championship and won it, there will be nothing to say he lost first round in Ulster. This part of the forum is very quiet now isn't it

It's a pity for the Gaels that they didn't had that those players now, as Ulster was there for the taking this year, all the remaining teams have never won Ulster Club.

Might not get as a good a chance again, Crossmaglen hit by a flu bug this year and had injuries last year and Clarke away travelling, they will probaly be back strong again next year.

Maybe all 3 Clubs from Cavan should just amalgamate next year...
