Good win today Cavan 1-13 Monaghan 2-04 Monaghan only scored a goal in the second half. They managed without young Pierson after all. Tyrone next.

The lads did very well in fairness. Monaghan slightly better in the first 10 minutes and opened up a slight lead got 3 points on the board, but our lads seems to suss them out and dominated the rest of the first half. Took some lovely scores and were leading 0-8 to 0-3 as they headed into injury time, even losing James Smith and they were still motoring. Monaghan then broke through and got a decent enough goal in fairness and then finished off the half with a point. Couldn't believe it, even the Monaghans beside me were laughing. They barely turned up in the first half and were a point behind. Lads came out again and got the first score, before a poor turnover in the middle of the field when under little pressure had Monaghan winning the ball. A quick ball into the forwards and a Monaghan forward raced onto it and got their second goal. They were now leading and barely even played, although that was their last score. Fair play to the lads they kept it going and picked off scores and were leading well coming to the final whistle. The goal was the icing on the cake. Make no bones about the fact that this was a poor Monaghan side. Outside the goals they were nowhere near Cavans level, and their shot selection was woeful. Some brutal wides, we really should have thrashed these. Our lads are good, and that was without Pierson who can;'t play again at this level, and Smith who missed most of the game injured. A word about Paddy Lynch - that lad has a great stroke of a ball. Took 9 points, and a lot of those were frees off the ground. Great to see a potential free taker coming through the ranks. He definitely has the potential. Tyrone next, and it''ll be a tough ask after they dispatched Down...

Two yellows for fouls, not much to it. Should be a rest of game ban and be back for next week. Monaghan lad got a red with the last kick of the ball. He was in possession of the ball, and threw an elbow in the face of a Cavan lad. Ref called a foul, and then then pushed the ball in the face of another Cavan player. Ref then gave him two separate yellow cards and then a red. Never saw that before. Suppose it was right but didn't know you could give two yellow cards in one go. Smith was moving well enough coming off, but was holding his right leg slightly. Could be tight for him to be back for next week. Good win for Cavan u20s but I'd have to say they did not look impressive in a lot of areas of the pitch,we looked in big trouble with Monaghan's No8,No11 and No 14 ,all three looked like future Monaghan seniors.Our brand of football was very very lateral and defensive,You'd like to see a bit more continuity in style betweeen our 20s and seniors.Still, everyone happy once we beat Monaghan I suppose. celt2018 (Cavan) - Posts: 160 - 01/07/2019 12:24:53 2203471 Link 0 |

With all due respect, Cavan have some wonderful young footballers and the reason they weren't impressive was down to the manager and his defensive tactics that he's well known for. Same with the Senior players, many of them played under Hyland at u21 and senior, playing a horrible defensive brand of football, playing is side wards and backwards, it creeeped into the u16s, u16s and u21s and ruined many a good forward, but Mickey Graham is slowly but surely changing the defensive attitude and has us playing football the way it should be. Yes in reply to your post it is possible but you have explained it yourself two different offense, One for hitting or trying to hit a player and the other for shoving the ball into another persons face so correct call. In fact for throwing the elbow he could have got a straight red.

Agree Cavanblueman, a brutal negative boring brand of football, exactly what i'm saying,players with talent being coached out of them, lateral all the way the other day v Monaghan, pity that Micky's more expressive game is not being started at underage county level, then the learning curve wouldnt be so steep.Several times the other day v Monaghan the two inside Cavan forwards made runs with lots of space in front for the early ball but players took the no risk option of passing it around 55 metres from the danger zone.
