Muine Bheag - 2 Like(s)

Replying To Onion Breath:  "Hopefully a positive development is the news that St Andrews and Erin's Own are to merge under the one club banner of Muine Bheag. Hopefully it gives GAA a lift in an area that needs it badly and has been a waste land for GAA in both codes for decades, with only the odd short lived resurgence. It'll take more than this however so wondering if there's more to it than just a merger? Also how will it go down in the town? I know there's been opposition to this for years with strong loyalty to one or other club on the part of some who haven't always cooperated with one another. An end to that can be no harm at least. What do people think off the name? Muine Bheag doesn't seem to me to capture the imagination. Few in the town call it Muine Bheag so it mightn't get the traction needed to get young people enthused. Can't think of anything better mind you."
This is a process that started 13 months ago with three representives from all clubs (Muinebheag Juvenile Club, Erins Own and St. Andrews) assisted by the county board. At the moment it is just a merger and all involved know the amalgamation won't solve the current problems in Bagenalstown but it's a start. There will be a greater connect between juveniles and adult players and help develop a club spirit in the community at the very least. Juveniles will aspire to play for one club and wear one jersey which shouldn't be underestimated. Even developing McGrath Park and fundraising efforts will be much simpler. There is a realisation in Bagenalstown now that to improve their fortunes everyone must move with the times and leave the past in the past and some older members have listened to the opinions of the players and the community. This is illustrated in the vote yesterday. Over 97% supported the amalgamation and each of the three clubs had to pass the proposal by a 75% majority which carried easily. The name of the club will be Bagenalstown Gaels GAA Club or CLG Muinebheag in Irish. Here's to a bright future for the club as Carlow needs the town's to prosper for a sustainable organisation going forward. Fair play to all involved.

I think Carlow were outsiders in all McDonagh Cup games apart from Down and the first Offaly game with their changed team. It will be a big step up but hopefully the lads can show what they can do with a big Carlow crowd behind them. I see Conor Kehoe isn't listed on the 26 for tomorrow, has he gone abroad or picked up an injury?

We are 8 days from the Joe McDonagh Cup final and there has been no time or venue published officially. You'd have to question the GAA's commitment to hurling when such details for a final between teams ranked 12 and 13 in the hurling championship have not been published. There's not a hope in hell that the same scenario would apply to the final of the Tailteann Cup.

Best of luck to the players and management today, winner takes all although a draw would give us another chance against Westmeath.

Best of luck to the lads today. The league result should give the lads hope, I know it was in February but our forwards like the hard ground as well. The lads will give 100% like they always do but let's enjoy today regardless of the result. 2 years ago after losing the first round of the Christy Ring to Antrim we could only dream of days like this.

Replying To CARPS:  "Well, that's it for football for another year. Where do we go from here? Championship form suggests we are good enough for Division Three. We also seem to have good young players. What do we do now? ------------------------------ Also, a great year for hurling. But it's a bit worrying that minor and u20 teams haven't offered much in recent years. Do we need to take some action now, on the underage front?"
On the underage hurling front, it's simply a numbers game for us. Our current team is mainly back-boned by decent U21 teams from 2013 to 2016 where we reached a few Leinster semi finals. We just have to make sure that we keep and develop our best players from each year group. The likes of Fiachra Fitzpatrick, Jack McCullagh, Conor Kehoe, Ciaran Whelan, Jon Nolan and even Kevin McDonald and Chris Nolan wouldn't have been on the strongest minor or U21 teams but they are key players for us now and performing very well. I actually can't recall Paddy Boland hurling underage but I could be wrong! St Mullins have done it for years where they struggle underage but are able to add a few new players every year into an already strong senior team. To my knowledge they only have 2 minor hurling titles in their history. Hopefully this group of players have inspired the next generation to come through in 10/15 years. I think there are positive signs in clubs underage, Carlow Town/Setanta and Burren Rangers seem to have some strong underage teams and Kildavin/Clonegal have started back up hurling in their younger age groups along with entering a Junior team. I think a realistic goal we should be striving to is to have 8 senior clubs in 10 years time with Carlow Town and Burren Rangers competing at senior and hopefully Kildavin/Clonegal fielding at intermediate at least.

We were definitely the better team today. Disappointed we let them back into it after the sending off (which was very harsh) but I suppose they were always going to have their purple patch. Last 10 minutes was very impressive and shows the ability in this team. Kildare were very negative setting up with an extra defender and still played it after half time. They obviously had to abandon it after the red card. Gary Bennett played his role very well. Paul Coady was excellent, I thought he was our best player. He got on a mountain of ball. Jack Murphy had a great second half, James and Marty looked dangerous when they got on the ball. I was impressed with our fielding, we caught an ocean of ball in the air. Kildare were very aggrieved with the referee, he did give some soft frees to both teams but was probably more favourable to us overall. There's more in this team and they will need to produce it to win this competition but we are in the semi final now and have a good chance to go all the way.

Hard to put into words what that win meant today. To see the scenes on the pitch after the match was incredible, this was our All Ireland. The courage and passion displayed in the second half was pheonomenal. I was questioning Richie Coady's decision to play against the wind after winning the toss but it turned out to be the right call. Interesting that ourselves, Wexford, Waterford, Westmeath, Wicklow all came from behind having played against the wind in the first half. The first half was grim viewing but I had underestimated the wind until I was on the pitch after the game. The first 15 minutes we were steamrolled, conceded another goal similar to last week and 1-07 to 0-01 down and a man down. Feathers was a big loss, he had won the first ball into him and won a free with the second but it seemed to me that he tried to shrug off the full back and ended up cathcing him with the hurl. Jack Kavanagh's yellow was very borderline and it was a brave call (and the correct call) by management to take him off. We set up with David English sitting in front of the full back line and James Doyle dropping back. Even when we went down to 14 we persisted with this, Offaly pushed up and we only had one man in the full forward line. It was driving me crazy when we were conceding the puck out and Offaly could work it easily to midfield to take a shot at goal or lump it into Bergin and Dooley. However looking back at the game we did very well in the 15 minutes before half time, we hung in there and didn't let Offaly bury us (although Shane Dooley did miss a guilt edge goal chance). Marty got a great score right before half time to leave 11 in it. Straight from the throw in for the second half we were fantastic. We learned from last week, when under pressure we let the ball do the work. Seamus Murphy and Chris Nolan did outstanding work in the full forward line, even though Offaly had an extra man they won a lot of breaking ball and were in the right place at the right time for the goals. Chris was outstanding, 1-4 from play on Ben Conneely who is one of the best defenders in Leinster. Marty again stood up winning breaking ball, excellent fielding and free taking and scores from open play. His hit on Dermot Shortt which won a free for overcarrying was a real sign of intent. Our half back line were excellent in the second half, Richie Coady in particular. Thought we fouled at the right times too not allowing Offaly create goal chances. Offaly got nervous and they couldn't live with our intensity around the middle third. Brian Tracey also made a great save at a crucial time. Marty, Chris, Seamus and John Mike all chipping in with scores towards the end to complete a remarkable comeback with 14 men. Incredible scenes at full time and the great Carlow support played their part, very vocal in the second half. What a feeling and buzz we have heading into the Leinster championship now compared to if we had of been beaten today. Two months to clear up injuries, recharge and give Galway, Kilkenny, Wexford and Dublin everything we have knowing there's Division 1 hurling again in 2020. Magic.

Replying To Blackbog:  "Very very harsh. Basically management team gone for championship."
I think the vagueness of the rules was their undoing. The charge of minor physical interference was unproven in all three cases I presume by video evidence. However they were charged with threatening conduct which would be very hard to appeal against with video evidence. The minimum ban for such offence is 12 weeks. Big blow considering the lads by the letter of the law are not allowed to even attend training.

I watched the Antrim Kerry league final and the Antrim Westmeath game on Sunday. Antrim have been very impressive in both games. I feel the three point margin in the league final flattered Kerry who got a soft goal from a free but it was a decent performance from Kerry all the same but they are reliant on Shane Conway. Westmeath's performance against Antrim was one of the worst I've seen from a Westmeath team in years. Everything was off, touch, striking, speed etc. It wasn't a good sign for Westmeath when their 38 year old selector who retired 3 years ago started at full forward. I posted after the relegation final defeat that I felt Westmeath were not impressive and it was our own shortcomings at the time which resulted in relegation so Westmeath's decline might not be as big as it seems. Westmeath had a new goalkeeper (from Dublin) who had a poor day and from the relegation game they were missing Darragh Egerton, Shane Clavin, Killian Doyle and Liam Varley. However Antrim were missing Neil McManus with injury and other players through COVID/injuries such as James McNaughton, Conal Cunning and Michael Bradley. Ciaran Clarke who was a sub against Kerry scored 2-08 at the weekend. Antrim's half back line of Gerard Walsh, Paddy Burke and Joe Maskey are very strong and were hughly impressive against Westmeath. This will be a key battle on Saturday. Antrim will be favourites but hopefully the break since the league will have energised the team and we can put in a performance.

Replying To Onion Breath:  "What price hike? There has been no price hike that I'm aware of."
The game on Sunday is a double header with Offaly and Galway in the Division 1B of the hurling so I'd imagine they'll be charging the Division 1 hurling prices of €20.

Two huge games tomorrow and next Saturday for the hurlers and two wins needed to qualify. Have been lucky enough to make it to all three games and the lads have played some extremely good hurling at different stages. The Kildare game was set up perfectly for an ambush, once we lost to Offaly in the league we had a month to build up for it and the team and management got it spot on. We stepped off the Kildare puck outs and deciding to play against the wind in the first half backfired against Kildare. Once Kildare went short, we had cover in front of their full forward line, if they worked it short we had the numbers in the middle to turn them over. A very impressive display especially the first half. The Kerry game felt like a defeat, we wasted multiple goal chances in the first half which came back to bite us. But on reflection the team showed huge character to push on even when Kerry levelled 3 times in the second half. Once it went 0-15 a piece with 15/20 minutes to go, Kerry had all the momentum, a greater impact off the bench and we could have easily lost that game. The first 20/25 minutes of the Laois game was worrying and we looked tired after an intense game in Kerry 6 days previously but we played some excellent hurling in the 10 minutes before half time and for 15 minutes after conceding the soft goal in the 2nd half. Serious character shown to come from 7 points down. It was disappointing to not push on once Laois went down to 14 men and we have multiple chances to go ahead but what an end to snatch a draw. Mouse judged the free into the large rectangle perfectly, a great catch from James Doyle and a clear penalty despite what the Laois management and players said in the media afterwards! A great penalty by Mouse, I'm sure the penalty miss against Kilmacud Crokes would have been hard to get out of his head. Overall a positive campaign so far, we should have beaten Kerry but could have easily lost to Laois. The team are playing well and working hard with Mouse, Jack Kavanagh, James Doyle, Paul Doyle, Conor Lawlor, Kevin McDonald, Jack McCullagh have played well throughout the 3 games. The break was much needed as we don't have a depth compared to some of our rivals but we are a small county and have had a bit of turnover in the last few years. We don't have the likes of Alfie Corcoran, David English, Gary Bennett, Edward Byrne, Richard Kelly, Michael Doyle, Ross Smithers, Paul Coady, Ted Joyce, Seanie Whelan, Denis Murphy, Sean Murphy. Hopefully we get the win tomorrow and then get a big crowd in for the final game against Offaly next week.
