Relihan, Denis

The Late Denis Relihan It was with great sadness and utter shock that we learned of the untimely death of Denis Relihan, Hunter's Park on Monday morning last. Denis was at his work-place in Clonmel when he was suddenly taken ill and sadly he passed away soon afterwards. The parish as a whole has been numbed by the sadness as Denis a much liked and very jovial fellow will be sorely missed by us all. Always a man up for the 'craic' he was very good company to be with and rarely if ever was he in bad humour. Denis was also a hurler of some note in his day, coming from a strong GAA family with a huge hurling tradition. Although he did play football, it was with the caman that he was most successful. Playing at either corner or wing back he gave many a sterling performance in the green and gold jersey. He was one of those players who would look totally out of their depth during the league campaign but once the championship came around he was a different man altogether and you would really earn a score off of him. Indeed in my opinion his best ever display was in the 1991 North Cork Final against our old rivals Kilworth. Although we were well beaten in nearly every sector of the field Denis blossomed at left corner back giving the performance of his life. The general consensus afterwards was, had we won Denis would have been automatic choice for 'Man of the Match'. Denis was also very successful at his profession as a carpenter, graduating to foreman with the Bowen Construction Group in Cork. In his spare time, he also liked to go fishing and of course liked to socialise in the village with his friend's and family. Denis's passing is a huge loss to the community, but most of all to his family and friends we express our deepest sympathy. May the sod rest easy on you Denny boy! Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
