Moloney, Jim

October 30, 2007
A life involved in sports especially GAA affairs wherever he went in Ireland. Jim learned to hurl in Killeagh East Cork, grew up listening to stories of legends in an area steeped in hurling tradition. Christy Ring was a regular caller to his home. He played minor hurling with Cork and senior with Imokilly division county final '69. Won East Cork championship with Killeagh '67, '70 (captain) and '71, Kinnity College in Offaly, Shelton Abbey Forestry College, Arklow, won Leinster junior championship with Wicklow in Croke Park. He also played with many clubs both football and rugby to mention just a few. He was an all round sportsman, but his number one was hurling. His knowledge of the game was outstanding and the people he met in his sporting life were enormous. He refereed Munster colleges hurling and football - Harty Cup and Corn Uí Mhuiri. In later years he was chairman of the North Cork Juvenile GAA Board. One could fill a book on all his involvement in the GAA down the years. He was also secretary of Mitchelstown and Galtee Gaels GAA. Jim liked nothing better than a chat on a Sunday night with his friends on the weekend matches. He was held in high esteem by all who had the pleasure of meeting him, as he possessed a wonderful personality to young and old. One of nature's gentlemen he was everyone's friend. Most of Jim's days were spent working in the Galtees for nearly 40 years as forester with Coilte and Green Belt. When you take the next walk whatever road you choose you will see the legacy of his beloved work. In one way or another we are all much the better for having Jim Moloney walk among us sharing his gentleness of heart. He will be sadly missed by his many friends and work colleagues, but especially by his wife Susan, sons Ciarán and Fergal, daughter Niamh, grandchildren Marc, Micheál, Bébhínn, sisters and extended family. RIP. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís. Courtesy of The Avondhu October 2007
