Murphy, Michael

Michael Murphy & James Sexton The tragic deaths of Michael Murphy and James Sexton in a car accident on Sunday evening came as a terrible shock to their families and to the whole community to Castlelyons. Both have been involved in Gaelic games in the juvenile and adult clubs from an early age. Michael participated in both hurling and football at each age level in the juvenile club right up to the age of sixteen. He then went on to take part at minor and U21 grades. He also played at junior level. His parents Jerry and Mary have always been very loyal supporters of all the Castlelyons GAA teams. When the soccer club, Castlebridge Celtic, was set up he had no hesitation in joining. Since it began a few weeks ago, he participated in the 9-a-side soccer tournament organised by the club. Everyone in the Castlelyons GAA Club is saddened and would like to take this opportunity to offer sympathy to Jerry and Mary and to his brothers and sisters, Brid, JJ, Karen, Chris and John Paul. From an early age James played on both hurling and Gaelic football teams in the Castlelyons colours. Indeed in every team he played he was an important player in both codes. From juvenile he progressed to minor and U21 and here again he continued to improve. For the last three years he has participated in the senior hurling team and the junior football team. James was also a very gifted Soccer player. He played first with Castlebridge Celtic at underage level. He also played with Fermoy. He was then invited to join Cork City FC. This season he has been a regular player on their U21 team. Recently he began training with the senior squad. Perhaps the highlight of his sports career was being selected to play for Ireland at U15 level. The Sexton family have always been very loyal supporters of the club at every level. Indeed Seamus took up the responsibilities of chairman this year and has been both hard working and inspiring for both players and members alike. The club would like to offer sympathy to Seamus, Breda, Declan, Emily, and Leo on their terrible loss. Courtesy of The Avondhu August 2007
