The Late Pat Hartnett
Deep regret was occasioned over a wide area by the death in Ealing, London, of Pat Hartnett. Pat who had just celebrated his 85th birthday, was a member of a well-known Ardgroom family.
He endeared himself to all who knew him with his quiet humour and pleasant personality. An outstanding footballer in his younger days, Pat won titles with his native Ardgroom and with Beara during the late 1930's and early '40's. He was a member of the Beara team that won the Cork County senior football championship in 1940.
After emigrating to Birmingham, he continued to play football and captained the Warwickshire team that won the English county championship in 1945. Another Beara man who played against him on the day was the late Ted Lowney of Castletownbere, who lined out with London, who were the other finalists. Pat later moved to London where he continued his interest in football.
His funeral took place following Requiem Mass in Ealing.
Sympathy is extended to his wife Eileen (Murphy) who is a native of Gurranes, Allihies parish, sons, daughter, brothers, sisters and a large number of relatives in the Beara area.
