Sarsfield, James (Jim)

October 10, 2013
The passing of community stalwart James (Jim) Sarsfield on Wednesday last at Cork University Hospital was deeply felt in Watergrasshill and the wider area. Jim had been active right up until the time of his death, having attended the 30th annivesary celebrations of St Patrick's Community Hospital's Fundraising committee of which he was a founding member, just a fortnight before.
He also served as a Fine Gael member of Cork County Council where he was admired for his strong work ethic. A man of deeply-held beliefs, he wasn't one to compromise on his convictions even if, at times, it went against the party line. Watergrasshill GAA, the East Cork division and county board also benefitted from his involvement over many years as he performed his duties with characteristic commitment and diligence. He was president of the club at the time of his death.
Beloved son of the late John and Nora and also predeceased by his brother, Felix and sister, Peg, Jim is survived by his sister May (Mackey). He is mourned and will be sadly missed by his sister, nephew Jer, nieces Margaret Collins and Marian O'Callaghan, grandnephews Brian and Shane, grandnieces Sharon and Claire, his carer Margaret, relatives and a wide circle of friends.
After reposing at Ronayne's Funeral Home in Fermoy on Friday afternoon his remains were taken home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Watergrasshill that evening. He was buried in Rathcooney Cemetery after Requiem Mass on Saturday afternoon.
The large turnout at the removal on Friday evening in both Fermoy and Watergrasshill and at the funeral on Saturday afternoon bore witness to the esteem and affection in which he was held by so many. May he rest in peace.
