Lombard, Tom
August 31, 2013
On Monday of last week, Tim Lombard, who had long been a stalwart of the Ballinhassig GAA Club, passed on after a short illness.
Described by Donal Coleman as a man who never had a bad word to say about anyone, Mr Coleman added that Tim was one of the most respected members of the community and one of nature's gentlemen. A committed member of the 'Blues' Club', Tim had given a lifelong service to Ballinhassig in a number of capacities, including being elected treasurer as well as a selector on three occasions when Ballinhassig secured county silverware. Most recently, the quietly spoken Ballinhassig resident had been the club's president which many of the club's members described as a fitting tribute to a man who wore Ballinhassig on his sleeve with such pride.
In what must have been one of the most fitting tributes any club had afforded its members, Tim was reposed in Ballinhassig's club rooms as part of the funeral service on Wednesday last.
Known for his fundraising abilities, Tim had been involved in securing the original pitch in Ballinhassig and had gone on to be instrumental in collecting for the club's latest facility at Ballinaboy. A former employee of Cork Farm Marchinery, he was well known throughout the county, which he utilised to the advantage of the club to sell the odd ticket or two.
Outside of his love of Gaelic games, Tim always had a concern for his neighbours in the parish, visiting the sick or paying his condolences to those who had recently suffered a bereavement. Outside of GAA circles, the Lombard family has long been associated with Fine Gael, with his late brother, John Lombard, being a public representative at Cork County Council. Tim took great pride when his nephew, Tim Lombard, Minane Bridge, and current chairman of Tracton GAA, was elected county mayor.
Tim is survived by his wife, Nonie, daughters, Anne , Noreen, Mary, Eileen and Theresa, son, Dan-Joe, sister, Noreen, sons-in-law Con and Tom and grandchildren Cliona and Conor.
