McGrath, Joe

January 17, 2013
Well known GAA coach Joe McGrath passed away last week. Joe coached a Cork junior ladies football team to Cork's first All-Ireland triumph in ladies football at adult level 1995. At that time, Cork had no senior team and ladies football was not as strong as it is at present.

Glanworth were Cork Co. senior ladies football champions at the time and Glanworth girl Marie Browne (now Noonan) was captain of that team. All the Glanworth girls have happy memories of Joe and that triumph over Tyrone in Croke Park. Among the other Glanworth players who featured on that team were: Marie Reynolds, Siobhan Murphy Therese O'Keeffe, Mary and Margaret Buckley, Fiona O'Driscoll, Elaine Browne, Liz Sweetnam Kathy Browne, Lorraine O'Keeffe and Marie Barrett.

Glanworth men Jas Cummins and Peter Reynolds played key roles in Joe McGrath's backroom team that war.
