O'Donoghue, Pat

August 02, 2012
One of Araglin's best known individuals, Pat O'Donoghue passed away at his home in Carey's Lodge Araglin on Saturday, 28th July.

Pat was honorary vice president of our club and enjoyed going to both hurling and football matches, He was also very interested and involved in horse racing, especially National Hunt and point-to-points. His shop in Araglin was a popular meeting place for many years. During frosty mornings the warm fire was always a welcome sight - it was also a great place for news, views and debate. Pat, also operated a mobile shop which served an extended area- in the days before Tesco, Aldi, Pat's car and horsebox was a major boost to housewives. All calculations were done mentally and there was hardly ever a mistake. While confined to a wheelchair in recent years, it didn't curtail his social and sporting outings and in this regard his family were really good to him. He was also a great newspaper man and went through the major publications cover to cover.

His time in a wheelchair presented problems for a man who likes his tobacco but usually a good Samaritan was on hand to provide the all important 'light'. Not surprisingly there was a huge turnout at his funeral with people travelling from far and near to say farewell to a familiar, popular and outgoing character who always had great time and interest in his native Araglin. As a mark of respect to the O'Donoghue family, Araglin and Ballysaggart players involved in last weekend's carnival hurling tourment observed a minute's silence prior to the game. Araglin GAA Club extends sincere sympathy to immediate and extended members of the O'Donoghue family on their loss. May Pat rest in peace.
