The Late Kieran Hegarty

The communities of Monkstown, Ringaskiddy and Carrigaline were plunged into mourning following the sudden death on May 3rd of one of the area's sportsmen. Twenty eight year old Kieran Hegarty died following training with members of the Shamrock's club hurling team in Shanbally. He collapsed in the dressing room after the training session and could not be saved, despite attempts to revive him by club members and a crew from the HSE ambulance service. Club members used their defibrillator to try to save the star player but he was pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital. A post-mortem examination was carried out the following day.

Kieran was a native of Monkstown but had been living with his mother Mary in Carrigaline. He is also mourned by his sisters Susan and Sinead. He played with both the Shamrock's hurling and football teams and recently played on the Junior Football Championship winning side that defeated Kinsale.
