The Late Eamon Roche

It was a sad day in Watergrasshill when we learned of the death of one our esteemed vice presidents of Watergrasshill Hurling Club. Mr Eamon Roche was a very valued member of the club and was one of the best supporters we ever had.

Eamon spent some of his youth playing for Watergrasshill Hurling Club. He played corner back in 1962 for Watergrasshill versus Sars in O'Mahony's field (now Priory Court!).

He achieved vice presidential status for his role as an excellent supporter to all teams. Rarely was there a match on that "Butch" was not seen at. He gained his nickname because he served his time as a butcher in Jack Hawe's in fermoy. His trips to Croke Park with the late Michael Sheehan was legendary and the "Ford Hotel" was a popular choice.

On 16th March 1964, Eamon together with Jim O'Connor and John O'Mahony brought a young John O'Neill to Shannon Airport for his travels to the States. From Shannon a trip was made to Croke Park to see the Railway Cup final where Christy Ring was playing for Munster. Unfortunately due to bad timing a hotel room was not found in adequate time and The Phoenix Park was the base for the night in the car!.

The boys woke up frozen as it had snowed during the night!. It was supposed to have been a very memorable trip!.

Eamon is survived by his brother Denis and sisters Rena and Eileen. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.
