The Late William 'Danno' Harty
His many friends in Fermoy were saddened to hear of the death of Willie Harty which occurred in Manchester recently. Willie, who was known to everyone by his nickname, 'Danno' was from a very well known Fermoy family, he was from Clancy Street, where his brother Frank still lives in the family home,
'Danno' received his early education in the local C.B.S. and later in Fermoy Technical School. In his teens he served his time as a baker, working in what was then O'Donovan's Bakery which, later became Barry Brothers Bakery in MacCurtain Street. Danno excelled at many spots, but many people will remember him best as the goalkeeper for the Cork Road minor soccer team, for whom he gave some great displays between the posts. He took his nickname, Danno from the great Kerry goalkeeper Danno O'Keefe, and played for the Saint Patrick's minor team which won the Cork County minor championship by defeating Nemo Rangers in the final in 1953.
Danno emigrated to England in the late 1950s, first to London and later to Manchester, where he worked for many years, but always keeping in touch with his beloved Fermoy. He loved to keep in touch with all the news from his home-town by reading The Avondhu every week, and he also enjoyed listening to Radio Eireann. 'Danno' had a wonderful outgoing personality that endeared him to all who knew him. Like many of us of his generation, he loved films, and had many happy memories of going to the pictures in the Palace and the Royal, otherwise known as below (Palace) or over the Royal.
'Danno' was the son of the late William and Julia Harty, his father was a long-serving member of Fermoy Urban Council. His Funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Richard's Church in Atherton in Manchester, the church where he and his wife Elsie had been married. Sincere sympathy is extended to 'Dannos' wife Elsie, to his sisters Maureen and Winnie and to his brothers Pad, John and Frank and to the extended family.
